Over 1,100 Dog Bites in Wake County Raise Questions About Public Safety
Central North Carolina is facing growing concerns over the management of dangerous or potentially dangerous dogs. In Wake County, nine dogs have been declared dangerous or potentially dangerous between 2023 and November 2024, alongside over 1,100 reported dog and puppy bites. However, this data does not account for local animal control jurisdictions, and communication with the public is limited. Neighbors aren't notified when a dangerous designation occurs, and the county's record-keeping system does not track addresses.
Durham County has labeled 63 dogs as dangerous or potentially dangerous since 2022, but even with these designations, multiple dogs have been found residing at the same addresses. Meanwhile, Cumberland County saw a particularly tragic incident where a five-year-old girl was attacked by a German Shepherd that had been deemed potentially dangerous in the past. Despite regulations, oversight fell short, as the dog was not under a required permit at the time. This case has led to urgent calls for stricter regulations, such as mandatory dangerous dog registries.
Victims' families are now pushing for reforms to protect the community and hold reckless dog owners accountable. However, county officials cite challenges with maintaining and sharing comprehensive records, leaving many to question whether current safety measures are sufficient. Read Full Report

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream Ends Its Run in Cary, Celebrating a Mission-Driven Legacy
Howdy Homemade Ice Cream, an ice cream parlor in Downtown Cary known for employing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), will close on November 24, marking the end of nearly a year of serving the community. Opening to much fanfare in February, the shop became a hub of inclusion, where employees with IDD could gain valuable work experience and build transferable career skills. Owner Phillip Lin emphasized the impact the business had on its staff, with many growing both personally and professionally through their roles.
The shop also partnered with local organizations like Gigi’s Playhouse, which serves children and young adults with Down Syndrome and shares a wall with Howdy Homemade. The collaboration extended the shop’s reach within Cary, making it more than just an ice cream destination. Known for crafting unique flavors and in-house specials, Howdy Homemade was beloved by patrons who valued its mission as much as its menu.
As the shop prepares to close, its contributions to the community and its commitment to providing opportunities for individuals with IDD remain a significant part of its legacy.
The announcement has prompted an outpouring of gratitude from those who supported and were touched by the store’s purpose-driven presence in Downtown Cary. Read Full Report | Original FB Post
