NCDOT Sets New Year’s Target for I-40 Reopening Near Tennessee Border

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is aiming to partially reopen Interstate 40 near the Tennessee border by New Year’s Day, following the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene.

The storm washed away large sections of the eastbound lanes through the Pigeon River Gorge, prompting a major stabilization effort to secure the remaining westbound side. The partial reopening plan would allow for one narrow lane in each direction, with a reduced speed limit of 40 miles per hour over a 9-mile stretch spanning both North Carolina and Tennessee.

While the limited reopening may ease some of the current travel disruptions, NCDOT acknowledges that full restoration is still a long way off. Engineers are grappling with the complexities of the narrow, rugged terrain, and long-term reconstruction plans remain in the early stages. For now, officials urge patience from travelers as workers continue to ensure safe passage through this crucial and difficult corridor. Read Full Report.

Powerball Winner in Apex Scores $500,000

A Powerball ticket sold in Apex at the Circle K on West Williams Street was one of two that turned a $50,000 win into $500,000, thanks to the Power Play multiplier, after Monday night's drawing.

The second ticket that secured the same half-million-dollar prize was purchased through Online Play, also matching four white balls and the Power Ball. Another ticket sold at a Circle K in Kernersville won $50,000 by hitting the same numbers, though without the Power Play boost.

Despite these substantial wins, no player managed to capture the Powerball jackpot, which now stands at $75 million ahead of Wednesday's draw. The grand prize continues to tempt hopeful players, despite the staggering odds of 1 in 292.2 million. Read Full Report

Cary will adjust its operations on November 11 to observe Veterans Day. Most municipal offices and staffed facilities, including Town Hall, recreation centers, and the Citizen’s Convenience Center, will close, with services resuming on November 12. GoCary will operate normally on fixed routes, while Door-to-Door service will run on Tier I.

All curbside collection will be delayed by one day throughout the week, with schedules available online.

Meanwhile, some facilities like Downtown Cary Park’s guest services, The Bark Bar, Market 317, Cary Tennis Park, and Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve will continue normal operations, while Stevens Nature Center will be open with limited hours. The town’s Veterans Day Observance will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at Veterans Freedom Park, offering ADA-accessible shuttle service from Cary Academy.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question👇👇👇

La Paz, Bolivia, holds the title of the highest capital city in the world, sitting at an elevation of approximately 11,975 feet (3,650 meters) above sea level. Nestled in the Andes Mountains, La Paz’s unique altitude presents both challenges and breathtaking views. The city's striking geography, characterized by deep valleys and surrounding snow-capped peaks, influences its climate, culture, and daily life. Visitors and residents alike must often adjust to the thinner air, which can be a significant experience for those unaccustomed to high altitudes.
