Gunfight Erupts at Crabtree Mall, Damaging Cars and Raising Safety Concerns

Crabtree Valley Mall was the scene of a shocking gunfight last weekend as rival gang members exchanged gunfire in a parking deck near Macy's. Raleigh police arrested two suspects, charging them with felonies for discharging a weapon into occupied property.

While no one was injured, dozens of cars were damaged, leaving patrons and employees rattled. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as they took cover during the incident, and a Macy’s employee’s family has launched a fundraiser to repair his damaged vehicle. The shooting highlights a surge in gang-related incidents in North Carolina, with officials noting an increase in youth involvement due to a law passed in 2019.

Despite the unsettling event, the mall remained open, though concerns about public safety in community spaces continue to grow. Read Full Report.

Wake County Urges Pet Vaccinations After Rabid Bat Found in Raleigh

Following the discovery of a rabid bat inside a Raleigh residence, Wake County health officials are urging residents to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations up-to-date and take extra precautions.

Raleigh Animal Control removed the infected bat from a home on White Oak Road, later confirming its positive rabies test. Health leaders advise residents to avoid approaching unfamiliar animals, secure trash and food sources to reduce wildlife interactions, and to contact a veterinarian immediately if a pet comes into contact with a possibly rabid animal.

For additional safety, Raleigh residents observing unusual animal behavior are encouraged to call local authorities. These measures help prevent rabies spread, particularly during seasons when wildlife encounters are more common. Read Full Report

Duke Transplant Team Turns to Artificial Heart for Lifesaving Solution

Duke University Hospital has become the second U.S. hospital to utilize the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart, a cutting-edge device designed for patients with advanced heart failure. The hospital implanted this artificial heart in August to sustain Donavan Harbison, a Graham, NC resident facing end-stage heart failure.

After traditional treatments failed, Duke’s team turned to BiVACOR’s technology as a temporary solution. The device helped keep Harbison alive and strengthened him for a transplant. This marks another milestone for Duke, already known for groundbreaking work in artificial heart implants. With a unique magnetic levitation design, the BiVACOR model promises durability and holds future potential for long-term use. Read Full Report

  1. Issue #374: Trivia Question: The answer for yesterday’s question: “Who was the first Italian to become a saint, famously known as the patron of animals?” St. Francis of Assisi, the famous patron of the poor, of animals, and of Italy itself, was born in 1182 to a wealthy family. He gave up everything to dedicate his life to prayer and preaching God. He died in 1226 at 45. Thanks to Angela Moore for pointing it out.

I fixed it for the online version. The question should have been, "Who was the Italian physicist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on nuclear reactors?"

I thought a lot of people would know the answer to the original question so I changed it at the last second. I put the new answer in the newsletter but missed changing the question. Good catch. I am glad to see someone is reading all the way to the end of the newsletter!

    Have a wonderful day.

Cary Spotlight Reader’s Feedback:

We love Luganos. Food is consistantly good. Service is great. I am a fan of the Shrimp Oreganato and hubby the chicken parm. Bombolini for dessert!

We were there 2 days ago to celebrate a milestone Birthday. The waitstaff was excellent, as well as the food.

Great restaurant for Italian cuisine — lunch or dinner. Nice atmosphere.

Very good food, decent service. They used to serve Tilapia! Which I loved, but they took it off the menu. I wish they’d bring it back!

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question👇👇👇

Starfish, or sea stars, possess the remarkable ability to clone themselves through a process called fragmentation. When a starfish loses an arm, it can regenerate not only the missing limb but, in some species, even an entire new starfish can grow from the separated arm. This ability to regenerate and, in essence, clone themselves, serves as both a defense mechanism and a way to maintain population. This unique adaptation makes the starfish a fascinating example of resilience and regenerative biology in the animal kingdom.

For more information about starfish and their cloning abilities, you can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium page on sea stars.
