26 Still Missing as North Carolina Begins Long Recovery from Hurricane Helene

Weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated North Carolina, 26 residents remain unaccounted for, down from 92 reported missing last week. The storm, which made landfall in Florida on September 26, is now the deadliest in the state’s history, claiming 95 lives across North Carolina and nearly 250 fatalities throughout the Southeast. Helene's path of destruction left thousands without water, power, or cellphone service, and damaged infrastructure from Florida to Virginia.

Amid recovery efforts, misinformation about FEMA’s response has hindered progress, leading to confusion and fear among residents. Governor Roy Cooper assured the public that FEMA has responded swiftly, with 1,400 personnel deployed and $124 million already distributed to individuals in need.

FEMA has also launched a new program to hire community liaisons in every affected county, aiming to address local concerns, provide employment opportunities, and ensure residents have a direct voice in the recovery process. Cooper emphasized that the path to rebuilding will require bipartisan cooperation and sustained efforts over the coming years. Read Full Report.

Courage Edged by Bay FC in Narrow 1-0 Loss

The North Carolina Courage fell 1-0 to Bay FC on October 19 at PayPal Park. Both teams created early chances, with Riley Jackson and Kaleigh Kurtz coming close, but Bay FC’s attacks were denied by crucial saves from goalkeeper Casey Murphy. Despite controlling possession, the Courage were outshot 8-4 in the first half.

In a defensive second half, Denise O’Sullivan’s one-timer narrowly missed before Bay FC broke through in the 80th minute with a deflected free kick from Abby Dahlkemper.

The Courage nearly equalized in stoppage time, but Katelyn Rowland’s save secured the win for Bay FC, snapping the Courage’s seven-game scoring streak. The Courage will finish their regular season on November 2 against the Washington Spirit at WakeMed Soccer Park.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

Michelangelo, the renowned Italian artist and architect, is credited with designing the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, one of the most iconic structures in the world. Although he took over the project in 1546 at the age of 71, Michelangelo brought a visionary approach that greatly influenced the final design. His architectural work on the basilica solidified its status as a masterpiece of Renaissance art and architecture. The basilica remains a key site of pilgrimage and worship within the Roman Catholic Church.

For more information about St. Peter's Basilica and Michelangelo’s role in its design, you can visit the Vatican Museums' website.
