Pickleball Fever Hits Cary as Senior Games Kick Off
Pickleball players from across the state will descend on Cary Tennis Park for the NC Senior Pickleball Games, running from October 18-21, 2024. This multi-day competition is part of the North Carolina Senior Games State Finals, drawing nearly 900 participants for singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches across multiple age brackets.
This year’s tournament serves not just as an opportunity to showcase skills and foster camaraderie among players aged 50 and older, but also as a qualifier for the 2025 National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa. With more than 100,000 athletes participating nationwide, the Senior Games promote physical activity, social engagement, and healthy competition among older adults.
Organizers are urging attendees to plan ahead, as parking is limited. Spectators and participants alike are encouraged to carpool or use shuttle services from off-site lots to avoid delays. Food and drinks won't be available on-site, though numerous restaurants are nearby. Additionally, athletes are advised to bring their own seating, as bleacher space may be limited.
Volunteers remain crucial to the event’s success, with more still needed to support the games. As Cary prepares to host this vibrant competition, the NC Senior Games will offer residents and visitors a chance to witness athletic excellence and the power of community in action.

With insights into the biology of decision-making and the power of shared beliefs, Sinek’s talk will change how you think about leadership, marketing, and your own life's purpose. Don’t miss this eye-opening exploration of why people don’t buy what you do—they buy why you do it.

The Silent Risks of Sleep Medications for People Over 50
As sleep disorders become more prevalent, an increasing number of older adults are turning to sleep medications. Recent data shows that 12 percent of adults aged 65 and older use either prescription or over-the-counter remedies to help them sleep, compared to just 8.4 percent of all adults. However, medical experts caution that while these medications may provide short-term relief, they come with significant risks, especially for older individuals.
Many sleep aids, including newer drugs like Ambien and Lunesta, as well as over-the-counter options such as diphenhydramine (found in Tylenol PM and ZZZQuil), have been linked to side effects ranging from grogginess and confusion to increased risks of falls and respiratory issues. Even herbal remedies like valerian root and melatonin carry risks, underlining the importance of consulting with a healthcare provider before use.
Additionally, these medications may mask underlying health problems, such as anxiety, sleep apnea, or restless leg syndrome, which require proper medical treatment. Relying on medication without addressing these root causes can lead to larger health concerns over time.
Medical professionals recommend cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as the first line of treatment. This therapy focuses on identifying and changing habits that disrupt sleep, promoting long-term improvements. Lifestyle changes—such as regular exercise, managing caffeine intake, and establishing a calming pre-sleep routine—can also help improve sleep quality without the risks associated with medication. The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question👇👇👇
The giraffe holds the title for the longest tail of any land animal, with tails that can grow up to 8 feet long, including the tuft at the end. This long tail serves a practical purpose, helping giraffes swat away flies and other insects that might irritate their skin. The tufted end also assists in grooming, keeping the giraffe’s coat clean. This feature is just one of many unique adaptations that allow the giraffe to thrive in its environment.
For more information about giraffes and their adaptations, you can visit the San Diego Zoo's page on giraffes.
