Hurricane Helene Threatens North Carolina Crops and State Fair Participation
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, North Carolina’s agriculture is facing potential major crop losses, although a full assessment is still pending as many areas remain inaccessible.
Flooded fields near rivers and apple orchards have already shown signs of damage, and nurseries are reporting significant plant losses. The immediate focus of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture has been on rescue efforts and reopening roads, with a clearer understanding of the crop damage expected once access is restored.
The effects of the hurricane may also extend to the upcoming N.C. State Fair, which is scheduled to begin on October 17. Travel disruptions may prevent participants from the western part of the state from attending, potentially affecting livestock entries, agricultural displays, and craft exhibitors. Although the fair will go on as planned, the hurricane’s impact on the event remains uncertain. Read Full Report
Relief Teams from Wake County Mobilize for Hurricane Helene Recovery
As recovery efforts continue in Western North Carolina following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, more teams from Wake County have joined the mission to provide aid.
On Wednesday morning, a group of 20 firefighters from five departments, along with logistics personnel, were dispatched to support recovery operations. This is part of a larger initiative that has seen over 100 first responders from Wake County deployed, including specialized swift-water rescue teams and EMS units.
Supplies like blankets and cots have also been sent to Buncombe County, while emergency management personnel work at the state level to coordinate aid. The collective response from Wake County emphasizes the importance of unity and collaboration in the aftermath of a natural disaster. Read Full Story

South Kildaire KinderCare: Where Learning Begins and Children Thrive
South Kildaire KinderCare is more than just a childcare center—it’s a community dedicated to nurturing young minds and fostering a lifelong love of learning. Since opening in January 2022, this five-star-rated, NAEYC-accredited facility has quickly become a trusted partner for families seeking high-quality early education and childcare.
At the helm is Danielle Hayes, the center’s director, who brings over two decades of experience with KinderCare to her role. Her passion for education and dedication to building a caring, inclusive environment shines through in everything she does. “I believe school should be a partner in raising their child through daily communication and additional resources as needed,” Hayes often reminds her staff, quoting one of her favorite sayings. And this belief is reflected in every aspect of the South Kildaire experience—from the innovative Early Foundations® curriculum to the emphasis on empathy and acceptance in the classroom.
Parents who entrust their children to South Kildaire KinderCare sing its praises, particularly highlighting the personalized care and thoughtful communication they receive. "We’ve been going to South Kildaire KinderCare for a little over a year now, and we are very happy! Our 3-year-old absolutely adores his teachers and comes home excited to tell us all about his day," says one Google reviewer.
Many echo these sentiments, pointing out the warmth and professionalism of the teachers and the joy their children feel at the center. "My toddler feels at home here," notes another parent, listing the center’s healthy meals, seasonal activities, and constant updates through an easy-to-use app as key features that make the experience exceptional.
The facility itself has undergone significant upgrades, with improvements to classrooms and playgrounds that enhance the children's learning and play environments. These physical enhancements, combined with a robust curriculum, help prepare children for kindergarten and beyond. As one parent put it, “The curriculum is great with many different daily activities, the children are always happy and at ease.”
Beyond the classrooms, South Kildaire KinderCare is an active participant in the local community. From partnerships with Wake County Smart Start to involvement in NC Farm to Childcare, the center is committed to supporting causes like food pantries, Thanksgiving baskets, and donations to senior citizens. Future events like the upcoming Trunk or Treat on October 25th demonstrate their ongoing dedication to community engagement.
With nearly 50 years of experience in the field of early childhood education, KinderCare’s approach is designed to meet the unique needs of every child. At South Kildaire KinderCare, each child is given the tools to grow, explore, and discover their potential in an environment that feels like home—a place where learning and laughter go hand in hand.
For parents in Cary and Apex, South Kildaire KinderCare is more than just a daycare; it’s a place where children thrive and families feel supported every step of the way.
