Tropical Storm Helene Leaves Devastation in NC: 35+ Dead, Hundreds Missing

In the wake of Tropical Storm Helene, North Carolina is grappling with catastrophic flooding, landslides, and loss of life, particularly in the mountainous regions surrounding Asheville.

With over 35 confirmed fatalities, the majority in Buncombe County, and hundreds more still missing, state and local officials are focused on rescue efforts. However, damaged infrastructure, including nearly 300 closed roads and significant destruction to Interstate 40, is slowing the arrival of much-needed supplies and aid.

The state's National Guard, now with more than 550 troops deployed, is working to clear roads and assist in rescue missions. Communication remains limited in many areas due to widespread power and internet outages.

Despite these challenges, local communities are finding ways to stay connected, and the recovery process has begun, though officials caution that conditions remain hazardous, and many areas are still inaccessible. Read Full Report.

NC Courage Defeat Red Stars 3-1 to Stay in Playoff Hunt

The North Carolina Courage earned a vital 3-1 victory over the Chicago Red Stars at SeatGeek Stadium, boosting their playoff prospects in the NWSL. The Courage took the lead in the 15th minute when Chicago’s Cari Roccaro turned a cross into her own net under pressure from Ashley Sanchez and Brianna Pinto.

Just before halftime, Denise O’Sullivan doubled the Courage’s advantage with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, capping off a well-coordinated team effort. This marked O’Sullivan’s first goal of the season and her first against Chicago since 2023.

In the second half, Kerolin Nicoli, playing in just her second game since returning from injury, scored in the 66th minute, giving the Courage a commanding 3-0 lead. Chicago’s Ludmila managed to pull one back two minutes later, but the Courage maintained control to secure their third road win of the season.

Now standing at 11-9-2, North Carolina holds onto fifth place in the league standings. Next, the Courage will face San Diego Wave FC at WakeMed Soccer Park on October 5, with the game streaming live on NWSL+. The Courage defeated San Diego 4-1 in their previous encounter earlier this month.

Election Countdown:
Wake County's Future Library Services in Voters’ Hands

Credit: Wake.gov

With Election Day just 34 days away on November 5, 2024, Wake County residents will vote on a $142 million bond to support the expansion, replacement, and renovation of public libraries.

The bond would fund new libraries in Rolesville and Apex's Friendship area, replacements for the Athens Drive and Wendell libraries, and an expansion of the Fuquay-Varina Community Library into a regional facility.

Additionally, a new library is planned to address digital equity and serve underserved communities. Several other locations, including the Express Library and Green Road, would undergo renovations. If approved, the bond will bring 87% of Wake County residents within a 10-minute drive of a library, supporting the county's mission to promote reading and knowledge.

More details about the bond and the Nov. 5 vote can be found at wake.gov/LibraryBond24.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

The hippopotamus has the largest mouth relative to its body size of any land animal. Its jaws can open up to 180 degrees, measuring about 4 feet wide, allowing it to display an impressive and powerful yawn. This massive mouth is not only used for feeding on grass but also for defense and dominance displays. Despite its herbivorous diet, the hippo's formidable jaws and sharp teeth make it one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
