NC State Campus Faces PCB Contamination in Over 20 Buildings

Over the past seven years, NC State University has conducted testing in 27 buildings across its campus and found PCBs in 22 of them.

The discovery of these cancer-causing chemicals, which were banned by the EPA in 1979, has raised concerns about campus safety. PCB contamination was detected in various locations, including dormitories, classroom buildings, and the library.

Some buildings, such as Gold Residence Hall, reported PCB levels exceeding the EPA’s hazardous waste limits. The university has taken steps to remove or mitigate the contamination as part of renovation and demolition projects, but the pace and transparency of these efforts have drawn scrutiny.

The closure of Poe Hall in 2023 following high PCB levels has only heightened attention on the issue, as more buildings continue to be tested for contamination. Read Full Report

NC Beaches Closed to Swimmers Amid Pollution Concerns Following Storm

In the aftermath of Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, heavy rainfall and flooding have led state officials to advise against swimming at several beaches along North Carolina’s coast.

The storm brought over 18 inches of rain to some areas, and floodwaters are being pumped into both the ocean and sound at various locations. These floodwaters carry pollutants, including waste from septic systems and runoff from roadways, which pose health risks to swimmers.

Beaches in New Hanover, Carteret, and Brunswick counties—such as Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Oak Island, and Holden Beach—are under the advisory. Testing has begun to assess water safety, and officials will provide updates when the beaches are safe for swimming. Read Full Story

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

Venus has the longest day of any planet in our solar system, taking approximately 243 Earth days to complete one full rotation on its axis. Interestingly, this slow rotation means that a day on Venus is even longer than its year, which takes about 225 Earth days for the planet to orbit the Sun.

Venus also rotates in the opposite direction to most planets, making its days seem even more unusual. This slow and retrograde spin contributes to the extreme weather and temperature conditions found on the planet.

For more information about Venus and its unique characteristics, you can visit NASA’s official page on Venus: https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/venus/overview/.
