Cary Residents Question Water Quality After Reports of Black Slime
Concerns over Cary’s water quality have emerged as residents reported finding black slime and specks in their water. Janet Lane, a local homeowner, first noticed the issue when black slime appeared around her faucets, raising questions about the safety of the town’s water supply.
Others shared similar concerns on social media, posting photos of dark particles floating in their water. The town’s utilities department, however, assured residents that the water is safe, attributing the slime and specks to environmental factors in homes rather than problems with the municipal water system.
Cary's utilities director explained that the black slime is caused by a common household fungus and that the town’s water meets all federal safety standards, with over 70,000 quality tests conducted annually.
Despite these assurances, some residents remain uneasy due to a recent Environmental Working Group (EWG) report that found several contaminants in Cary's water exceed modern health guidelines, though they remain legally compliant.
The EWG emphasized that federal regulations may be outdated, fueling concerns about potential health risks. While town officials continue to emphasize the safety of Cary’s water and the town’s proactive measures, the incident has sparked broader discussions about water safety and regulatory standards.
Residents are advised to clean their fixtures thoroughly and contact the utilities department for further testing if needed. Read Full Story

Lenovo and Carolina Hurricanes Unveil 10-Year Arena Naming Agreement
The Carolina Hurricanes and Lenovo have entered into a 10-year naming rights agreement to rename the team’s home arena "Lenovo Center" starting in September 2024.
Lenovo, a global technology company with strong ties to North Carolina, has been a partner of the Hurricanes since 2010 and will now expand its role by integrating its technology into the arena as it undergoes renovations.
This partnership is expected to enhance the fan experience and strengthen Lenovo’s presence in the Triangle community. The arena, which has hosted the Hurricanes since 1999, is a major venue in North Carolina, drawing over a million guests annually for sporting events and concerts.
A public unveiling of the "Lenovo Center" signage is set for September 19, 2024. Read Full Story
Cary High Soccer’s Blue-Collar Comeback
Cary High School’s boys soccer team, long known for its blue-collar roots, is undergoing a remarkable turnaround after several years of decline.
Following a conference championship in 2019, the team’s fortunes plummeted, as economic struggles and the pandemic forced many players to prioritize family obligations over sports.
Cary High's student body faces greater economic challenges compared to nearby schools, which made rebuilding the team especially difficult. Despite these challenges, a core group of seniors, led by standout player Santiago Escobar, have shown resilience and determination.
This season, Cary has started strong, with a 6-1-1 record, and is already halfway to matching its win total from the past four years combined. The team's resurgence is a reflection of the school’s hardworking, blue-collar identity, which continues to thrive despite the changing nature of the town around it. Read Full Story

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Japan has the highest number of vending machines per capita in the world, with over 5 million machines nationwide—approximately one for every 23 people. These machines are a ubiquitous feature of Japanese streetscapes, offering a vast array of products beyond just snacks and beverages, such as hot meals, fresh flowers, clothing, and even electronics.
The prevalence of vending machines in Japan is attributed to factors like low crime rates, which reduce vandalism, high population density, and a cultural preference for convenience and automation. This phenomenon reflects Japan's innovative approach to technology and its ability to integrate it seamlessly into daily life.
For more information about vending machines in Japan, you can visit the Japan National Tourism Organization's page on vending machines.
