Twisted Scizzors Hosts Cut-A-Thon for Local Child Battling Cancer

Twisted Scizzors Salon, a perennial Maggy Award winner,  is holding its annual cut-a-thon on Sunday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the goal of raising $10,000 to support the family of 7-year-old Noelle Franklin, who is undergoing treatment for bone cancer at Duke Hospital.

The Cary-based salon has hosted cut-a-thons for over 13 years, each time selecting a local child or family in need. This year, the salon has already raised $6,500 and aims to reach its fundraising goal by the end of the event.

Stylists will donate their time and tips, with all proceeds going directly to the Franklin family. The salon's cut-a-thon represents a longstanding commitment to supporting the Cary community in times of need.

Wake County Expands Mental Health Support for First Responders

Wake County has taken significant steps to address the mental health of its first responders through the Peer Support Program, established in 2015.

Traditionally, first responders were expected to suppress emotional reactions to trauma, but that culture is changing as the mental toll of the job becomes more evident. The program offers emotional support from peers during and after critical incidents, ranging from trauma at work to personal struggles like divorce or depression.

Suicide rates among police officers have highlighted the urgency of such initiatives, with more officers dying by suicide than in the line of duty. The program, led by experienced first responders, provides an essential outlet for processing trauma.

Additionally, the Responder Assistance Initiative Program, headed by Aaron Back, extends similar support to those involved in major tragedies across the country, further emphasizing the growing need for mental health services in the first responder community. Read Full Report

Google’s suggestions for the term β€œnavy commander” 5 Sep 2024

Navy Commander Relieved of Duty Following Backward Rifle Scope Gaffe

Editor’s Note: I spent years in the U.S. Navy writing positive news stories to ensure that mistakes like these would end up buried on the second page of Google Search. So, why mention this story today? My real point is that I truly enjoy crafting our Local Business Spotlights, where we celebrate the success stories of small businesses in Cary.

The U.S. Navy has relieved Cmdr. Cameron Yaste, commander of the USS John McCain, after a social media controversy stemming from a photo of him using a rifle with its scope mounted backward.

The incident, which occurred months ago, attracted ridicule and raised questions about Yaste’s leadership. Though the Navy cited a general "loss of confidence" as the reason for his dismissal, no specific details were provided.

Capt. Allison Christy has stepped in as interim commander as the ship continues its deployment in the Gulf of Oman. The USS John McCain is part of a carrier strike group safeguarding U.S. assets in the region amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Read Full Story

Online Romance Scams: Spotting the Red Flags

Modern romance scams follow a pattern where scammers create false personas online, often portraying themselves as financially secure individuals or needy young women, to attract their victims.

These scams typically involve fake romantic interest, often never leading to a face-to-face meeting, and eventually result in requests for money.

Protection measures include: being cautious with overly flirtatious messages, never sending money, and conducting thorough checks on new romantic interests. If you suspect a scam, report it to law enforcement and the relevant dating or social media platform, block the scammer, and never send money.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Bullfrogs are unique among animals because they do not have a true sleep cycle. Instead of entering a typical sleep state, bullfrogs remain alert throughout their life.

Research suggests that while they do rest, they remain ready to respond to potential threats and opportunities in their environment at any time. This continuous state of alertness is crucial for their survival, especially in aquatic environments where threats can come from many directions.

For more detailed information about bullfrogs and their unusual rest patterns, you can visit the National Geographic website, which offers a wealth of resources on various animal behaviors and ecological studies.
