UNC Enhances Campus Safety Protocols One Year After Shooting
One year after a fatal shooting on its campus, UNC-Chapel Hill has introduced new safety protocols to enhance preparedness and security. The universityβs plan focuses on three main areas: training for faculty and staff, improvements in emergency communication, and upgrades to physical security infrastructure.
Online training sessions are now available to help faculty better understand emergency protocols and prepare to lead students in a crisis.
The university has also updated its alert system, based on feedback that previous communications were insufficient, to provide more frequent and specific updates during emergencies.
Additionally, UNC has installed more surveillance cameras and improved access for first responders, while ensuring that all classrooms have functional locks. A ceremony to honor the memory of the victim, Professor Zijie Yan, will be held this week at the university's bell tower. Read Full Report
Fiery Head-On Crash in Cary Leaves One Dead, Investigation Ongoing
A tragic accident on North Carolina Highway 55 in Cary resulted in the death of one man and left another with life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on the northbound side of NC-55, between Mahal Avenue and the entrance ramp to Highway 540.
According to the Cary Police Department, the crash was a head-on collision involving two SUVs. An SUV traveling southbound veered into the northbound lanes, causing a violent head-on collision with another SUV. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames, leading to a chaotic scene.
The driver of the SUV that crossed into oncoming traffic, Robert McKinnon, 67, of Cary, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, Xiucheng Feng, 55, of Apex, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

In observance of Labor Day on September 2, the Town of Cary will close most of its staffed facilities, including Town Hall, community centers, and the Citizenβs Convenience Center.
GoCary transit services will operate on a reduced Sunday schedule, and curbside waste collection will be delayed by a day throughout the week.
Several recreational and cultural facilities, such as the Bond Park Community Center and The Cary Theater, will have modified hours or closures during the holiday weekend, while others like the Bond Park Boathouse and Cary Tennis Park will maintain regular hours. The program allows Cary citizens to properly dispose of those byproducts of home cooking by requesting a special collection. Courage Eye Kansas City Clash After Heartbreaking Seattle Loss
The North Carolina Courage are preparing to host the Kansas City Current at WakeMed Soccer Park this Sunday, aiming to bounce back after a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Seattle Reign FC last weekend.
The match in Seattle ended in disappointment for the Courage, whose four-match unbeaten streak was snapped by an own goal in stoppage time. Despite holding a season-low four shots, the Courage dominated possession and defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Casey Murphy making several crucial saves to keep the game level until the final moments. However, a deflected long-range shot resulted in an own goal, sealing a narrow defeat and leaving the team with a record of 8-1-8.
Looking ahead to their matchup against Kansas City, the Courage are focused on regaining their momentum and providing a strong performance for their home fans.
The game presents a critical opportunity for the team to return to winning ways and solidify their position in the standings. In addition to the action on the field, the Courage will honor their five Olympians who competed in the Paris Games with a special post-match ceremony, offering a chance for celebration and reflection as they aim to put last Sunday's disappointment behind them. The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question πππ
Polar bears are unique among bears for their distinctively black skin, a trait that is often surprising given their white fur. The black skin serves an important purpose: it absorbs and retains heat from the sun more efficiently than lighter skin would, which is vital in their cold Arctic habitat. The white fur, which appears white due to the way it reflects visible light, actually helps them blend into their snowy surroundings while insulating them by trapping heat. The combination of black skin and translucent fur is an evolutionary adaptation that allows polar bears to maintain their body temperature in extreme conditions.
For more detailed information about polar bears and their adaptations to Arctic life, you can visit the World Wildlife Fund's page on polar bears.
