High-Speed Drones to Deliver Life-Saving AEDs in North Carolina

Duke University is at the forefront of an innovative initiative launching in September in Forsyth County, North Carolina, where drones equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) will be dispatched to cardiac arrest emergencies.

This collaboration, which also involves local emergency services and other partners, aims to enhance response times by using drones that can reach speeds up to 60 mph, potentially arriving at scenes faster than traditional emergency responders. The goal is to improve the crucial response window where timely intervention can mean the difference between life and death.

As part of this program, drones will deliver AEDs directly to bystanders at emergency scenes, providing verbal instructions for their use while a 911 dispatcher assists remotely. 

This method seeks to leverage cutting-edge technology to address the critical need for rapid medical response in private settings, where the majority of cardiac arrests occur. The initiative will serve as a vital test case for evaluating the effectiveness of drones in emergency medical services, potentially setting a precedent for expanding drone use in other critical health scenarios. The Cary Garden Club's contributions extend well beyond teaching gardening techniques.
