Wake County Endures Storms, Tree Falls, and Power Outages

The Triangle region faced severe storms early Monday, resulting in widespread tree falls and damage across Raleigh, Garner, and surrounding areas.

In Garner, a family home on Edgebrook Drive was hit by a falling tree, causing significant roof damage and forcing the family to rearrange their living space to cope with the intrusion of rainwater. Similar incidents in Raleigh led to power outages, blocked roads, and extensive cleanup efforts, as crews worked tirelessly to address the aftermath. Notable disruptions occurred on Brandywine Road near Trinity Road and Dunn Road off Falls of Neuse Road, where trees brought down power lines and blocked access.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported locally, though the storms highlighted the inherent dangers of severe weather. In Charlotte, a fatality occurred when a tree fell on an apartment building, and in Rolesville in Wake County, a worker was injured while attempting to remove a fallen tree.

Despite the damage and disruptions, communities are focusing on recovery, expressing relief over the lack of personal injuries, and rallying to restore normalcy in the wake of the storms. Read Full Report

Venus Flytrap License Plate to Promote Conservation in North Carolina

North Carolina is launching a specialty license plate featuring the Venus flytrap to raise awareness and funds for conservation.

Spearheaded by Damon Waitt of the North Carolina Botanical Garden, the initiative aims to spotlight the state's native carnivorous plant, found only in the Wilmington area.

The new plates, approved by Governor Roy Cooper and designed by artist Preston Montague, will direct $20 of the $30 fee to the North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation and $10 to the DMV.

The funds will support various conservation efforts, including seed banking and genetic studies. The plates will be available for order through the DMV in the coming months. Read Full Article

Despite Orlando’s goalkeeper blocking the first penalty and the Pride converting their first four, Courage debutant goalkeeper Marisa Bova saved the day by blocking Orlando’s fifth and sixth attempts, allowing Narumi Miura to score the winning penalty.
