Navigating North Carolina's Photo ID Requirement for Upcoming Elections

As North Carolina prepares for the 2024 general election, voters should be aware of the state's photo ID requirement. Most will use their driver's licenses, but several other forms of identification are also acceptable. Those without an appropriate ID can obtain one for free from their County Board of Elections or the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.

Voters who lack a photo ID at the polling place can still cast their ballots by filling out an ID Exception Form and voting provisionally.

Absentee-by-mail voters may include a photocopy of their ID with their ballot or complete an ID Exception Form if they cannot provide one.

This measure ensures that every eligible voter can participate in the upcoming elections, regardless of their ability to present a photo ID.

Wake County Pets Rescued from Hoarding Home, SPCA Seeks Donations

In a significant rescue operation, the SPCA of Wake County saved 48 pets from a hoarding home in Wake County. The animals, comprising 38 cats and 10 dogs, were found in poor conditions, many suffering from untreated injuries and diseases. The situation arose due to the caretaker's worsening dementia, leaving her husband overwhelmed with responsibilities.

The SPCA commended the husband's courage in seeking help, understanding the challenging circumstances he faced. The rescued pets are now receiving medical attention and are on the road to recovery. The SPCA is collaborating with law enforcement to ensure the ongoing safety of the animals.

To aid in the substantial medical care required, the SPCA is appealing for donations. Contributions made by June 30 will be triple matched by Care First Animal Hospital, maximizing the support for these animals in need. Read full story

Cary's 11th Annual Run For Liberty: Honoring Veterans and Supporting Amputees

On June 29th, 2024, the 11th Annual Run For Liberty will be held at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, NC. The event starts with registration at 7:15 AM, followed by a 1 Mile Fun Run at 8:00 AM and a 5k race at 8:30 AM. Sanctioned by USA Track & Field, the race encourages participants to honor military personnel and veterans by running, jogging, walking, or rolling.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Move For Jenn Foundation, which provides grants for activewear prosthetics to individuals who have lost limbs due to sarcoma or related diseases.

This support allows amputees to engage in physical activities once again. Participants are invited to wear patriotic costumes, with a prize for the best dressed.

Early registration and sponsorship are encouraged to support this meaningful cause. Del Bianco Prosthetics and Orthotics, a local clinic, is a proud supporter of the event and its mission. Learn more here

Real Talk:
Mixed-Use Developments in Cary

Credit: Cary Spotlight Issue #248

Yesterday (Cary Spotlight Issue #248) we asked our readers to answer this question since Cary's Waverly Place, an outdoor shopping center, is poised for a substantial makeover by Houston-based developer Hines.

Here are some of our communities thoughts on this matter.

Concerned voices:

“Too many people and cars in an already crowded area. ”

“Greatly affects traffic!! Reduces parking, negatively affects neighborhood ambience. A no win situation for current residents of the area!!”

“THIS IS REDICULOUS, ALL CARY WANTS IS TAX REVENUE WE NEED A NEW BOARD. TRAFFIC IS ALREADY GETTING , AND CRIME IS HIGHER THAN EVER. STUPID STUPID GREEDY POLITICIANS. I BET THEY ARE ON THE TAKE”

“These people need to realize that Cary needs its charm and individuality, we do not need another Fenton. ”

“Cary is getting way too crowded with lots of traffic. I am very disappointed in all the multi-story resident homes being built and that the homes look more like crowded city apartment buildings. To improve climate change in our area, you need to build less and stop the removal of trees. I am also concerned that Jordan Lake will not be able to handle all the water needs for a much-increased population. Cary used to be beautiful but now all the green areas are disappearing.”

“This model is failing in other markets and in places here as well. So why do we keep doing it? Hopefully it will bring true affordable housing. Traffic is already a challenge there. How the town looks hard and plans for that as well. Fenton development is NOT the jewel we have in Waverly now. ”

“I’m happy to see mixed use transformations. I believe the changes the city allows should include family friendly, affordability to the working class re: housing & various restaurant & shopping venues, maintain the trees, walking trails& access to trails to encourage walking& biking lifestyles. I like the Fenton as an upscale option but I hope Waverly will not become high end like that…I like that Cary has a locally owned business’ and community ’all are welcome positive vibe’ I don’t want to lose this to the high end exclusive big city vibe. ”

Happy voices:

“It looks more upscale than house after house after house.”

Editor’s Note: We only received one comment from someone who is happy about this style of development from this small sample of readers who were willing to share their thoughts on this issue. These are complex issues and it is good to hear real talk about what matters to how and where we live.

How do you feel about the trend of transforming traditional malls into mixed-use developments?

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
In 1994, the Cary Downtown Farmers Market was founded, becoming the first formal farmers market in the town. Prior to this, Cary, with its agricultural background, had only seen co-ops, farm stands, and popup markets in various locations, as many residents grew their own vegetables.
