Waverly Place to Undergo Transformation, Community Input Sought
Cary's Waverly Place, an outdoor shopping center, is poised for a substantial makeover by Houston-based developer Hines. The proposed redevelopment includes up to 750 apartments and 30,000 square feet of commercial space, focusing on 7.74 acres of the 22.5-acre property.
This plan aims to provide workforce housing, targeting middle-income earners in Cary. The public will have a chance to express their views at a Cary Town Council hearing tonight.
The proposal is part of a larger trend of transforming traditional malls into mixed-use developments in the Triangle area. Hines, known for the Fenton project, sees Waverly Place as a core investment. The Town Council will forward the request to the planning and zoning board for further action.

North Carolina on Pace for Record Snake Bites in 2024
North Carolina is experiencing a record-breaking number of snake bites in 2024, with 257 reported incidents in the first six months, indicating this year may surpass the 733 bites recorded in 2020. The surge is linked to extreme heat and scarce resources, prompting snakes to move closer to residential areas in search of food and water. This increase in snake-human interactions has led to more bites, particularly in yards and gardens.
Hospitals like WakeMed have seen a rise in patients needing anti-venom. Snakes are most active at dawn and dusk, times when people are often outdoors, increasing the chances of encounters. Research from NCPC and Atrium Health shows most bites occur at home, often during gardening or walking.
Copperheads are the primary culprits in North Carolina, followed by cottonmouths. Residents are advised to be cautious, make noise to alert snakes, and treat all bites as venomous. Prompt medical attention and monitoring for swelling are crucial. Read full story
U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Heads to Olympics Without Alex Morgan
Veteran forward Alex Morgan, a key figure in U.S. women's soccer with three Olympic appearances and two World Cup titles, has been left off the Olympic roster for the Paris Games by coach Emma Hayes.
This decision underscores a shift towards integrating younger talent into the team as they look ahead to the 2027 Women's World Cup. Despite Morgan's recent return from an ankle injury and participation in friendlies against South Korea, Hayes opted for a younger squad, marking the youngest roster since 2008.
Morgan expressed her disappointment but remains proud of her contributions. The squad also includes controversial midfielder Korbin Albert, whose inclusion reflects Hayes' commitment to addressing issues of inclusivity within the team. The U.S. team will play preparatory matches against Mexico and Costa Rica before their Olympic opener against Zambia on July 25.
