Old Military Grenade Found in Cary Backyard
An unexpected and alarming discovery was made in a Cary backyard on Wednesday afternoon when a homeowner unearthed an old military grenade during landscaping. The incident occurred in the 600 block of Kings Fork Road, a neighborhood located off SE Maynard Road.
The homeowner contacted Cary police immediately upon finding the grenade, initiating a swift response from local law enforcement and military personnel. The Cary Police Department, alongside the Raleigh Police Bomb Squad, quickly arrived on the scene to assess the situation.
Initial investigations suggest that the grenade may have belonged to the previous homeowner, a retired military veteran. Experts from Fort Liberty have also been called in to further analyze and safely remove the ordnance.
The discovery has prompted a coordinated effort to ensure the safety of the residents in the area. Cary Police have emphasized their commitment to the community's well-being and are working diligently with their law enforcement partners to address the situation. Read full article

Honoring History: Gus Zimmerman's Grandfather's WWI Story
In a heartfelt celebration, the Cary Spotlight newsletter honors one of its loyal subscribers, Gus Zimmerman, who has reached the milestone of 100 editions, earning the title of "100 Milestone Maverick."
Zimmerman's connection to the newsletter is deepened by his family's rich history and dedication to preserving the legacy of his grandfather, John B. Kane.
Originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Zimmerman relocated to Cary, NC, in 2002 with the BASF company. After retiring in 2017, he and his wife published his grandfather's memoirs from World War I. Kane, a draftsman from Philadelphia, was one of the first members of the American Army Graves Registration Unit 301, where he plotted the graves of fallen soldiers, establishing the first American cemeteries on foreign soil.
Written in 1940 for his then 10-year-old daughter, Kane's memoir, "The Khaki Road of Yesterday," recounts his wartime experiences, including a brief romance in France and a commendation from General Pershing for his bravery under heavy shell fire and gas. The memoir, a family treasure kept in a desk drawer for 77 years, was finally published in 2017. The release was commemorated with an interview by Joel Brown of ABC News during Veteran's Day that year.
Zimmerman's story not only highlights his grandfather's service and the preservation of history but also serves as a testament to the enduring impact of personal narratives.
The Cary Spotlight celebrates Zimmerman's loyalty and shares this story to inspire others to honor and remember the sacrifices of those who served in World War I.
