Decades of Valor: WWII Veterans Return to Normandy for 80th D-Day Anniversary

As the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaches, more than sixty veterans of World War II, aged between 96 and 107, have embarked on a poignant journey from Dallas to France. Organized by American Airlines, this trip is one of several that will transport these honored individuals across the Atlantic for a series of commemorative events.

Once in France, these veterans will participate in a series of tributes beginning with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Suresnes American Cemetery and including visits to significant historical sites like the Eiffel Tower. They will also partake in the le Ravivage de la Flamme ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe, honoring France's fallen service members.

The journey will culminate in Normandy, where the veterans will pay homage at Omaha and Utah Beaches, key sites of the Allied landings on June 6, 1944. During these landings, nearly 160,000 troops stormed the beaches in a monumental effort to breach Nazi fortifications and commence the liberation of Western Europe. D-Day resulted in 4,415 Allied fatalities, including about 2,500 Americans, and thousands more wounded.

In addition to the WWII veterans, the group includes six Medal of Honor recipients from more recent conflicts and two women known as "Rosie the Riveters," symbolizing those who sustained the wartime industry at home.

The National World War II Museum in New Orleans underscores the urgency of preserving these stories as the number of living WWII veterans dwindles.

They continue to educate the public through school programs and exhibits to ensure the legacies of these veterans endure in collective memory. Read more

RDU Sets Record with 22% Increase in Passengers

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) distinguished itself as the fastest-growing major airport in the United States last year, with an impressive 22% surge in the number of passengers boarding flights, compared to the prior year.

This growth topped the list of the 50 largest airports in the country, outperforming others like San Francisco, Washington-Dulles, Luis Muñoz Marín in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Kansas City, which all reported around an 18% increase. According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, RDU's performance marks a significant achievement in its operational history, reflecting its increasing importance in the national aviation landscape.

The year 2023 proved to be a landmark for RDU in several ways. The airport not only handled a record-setting 14.5 million passengers but also broadened its global connectivity by adding four new airlines and launching flights to 25 new destinations.

The expansion continues into 2024, which is already on track to surpass previous records. This summer, RDU is set to further boost its international service offerings with the introduction of new routes to Frankfurt, Germany via Lufthansa on June 6; to Panama City, Panama via Copa Airlines on June 21; and to Mexico City, Mexico via Aeromexico on July 1. With these additions, RDU will offer nonstop flights to 10 international destinations, the most in its operational history. Read more
