Cinco de Mayo: Not Independence Day but Still Important

Cinco de Mayo is coming up this Sunday. Many people think it's the day Mexico celebrates its independence, but that's not true. Mexico's Independence Day is actually on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is really about remembering a special victory from a long time ago.

Back in 1862, Mexico fought against France in a battle called the Battle of Puebla. The French army was bigger and had better equipment, but the Mexican army still won. This was a proud moment for Mexico because their smaller army defeated a stronger one on May 5th, which is why we call it Cinco de Mayo.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, especially where many Mexican-Americans live. This started in the 1960s when Mexican-American activists wanted to celebrate this victory. Now, many people in the U.S. enjoy parades, music, dance, and Mexican food on this day. It’s a bigger holiday in the U.S. than in Mexico.

Big cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston have some of the biggest parties. In Mexico, the state of Puebla, where the battle happened, has parades and even reenacts the battle!

Understanding the true meaning behind Cinco de Mayo allows for a more informed and respectful celebration of the day, recognizing it not as Mexican Independence Day, but as a day that marks a pivotal moment in Mexican history. Read Full Story

Narrow Escape: Cary Homeowner Rescued Following Porch Collapse

In a harrowing incident in Cary, a local woman had a narrow escape when her front porch collapsed while she was standing on it. The collapse occurred just after 9:15 AM on Friday, resulting in the woman becoming trapped by the debris.

Local police and emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene, where they found the homeowner with her legs pinned beneath a concrete slab adjacent to the house’s foundation. Despite the frightening situation, the woman was able to communicate with first responders throughout the rescue operation, which took nearly an hour to safely extricate her.

Thankfully, her daughter, who was with her at the time of the incident, was unharmed. The homeowner was transported to a local hospital via stretcher, but authorities confirmed she was conscious and is expected to fully recover.

The immediate cause of the porch collapse has not been determined, and investigations are ongoing. This incident has left the community in shock, with neighbors recalling the screams heard at the time of the collapse and praising the rapid response of the emergency services. Watch Video Report
