Wild Turkey Turns Cary School Carpool Lane into Its Own Territory

An aggressive turkey has been the source of amusement and concern at Alston Ridge Elementary School in Cary, as it stubbornly claimed the carpool lane as its territory, causing disruptions.

School officials, including the principal who attempted to chase it away with an umbrella, and Cary Animal Services have been on the scene to address the situation.

The turkey, likely in search of a territory or mate, displayed territorial behavior common in the breeding season. Despite initial interventions, the bird's boldness only grew, leading to several close encounters with staff and parents.

Recommendations for dealing with such wildlife include using noise to scare them away and ensuring areas are unwelcoming to discourage their presence.

North Carolina DMV to Adjust Fees Upwards Starting July 1

Come July, North Carolina's DMV will implement a statewide increase in fees for nearly 90 license and registration-related services by 19.18%.

This adjustment is part of a statutory requirement to realign DMV fees with the Consumer Price Index every four years. The new fee structure will result in a $1 yearly increase in the cost of obtaining or renewing a regular driver's license, which translates to a total increase of $5 for a five-year license and $8 for an eight-year license.

Additionally, the cost for learner’s permits, provisional licenses, and duplicate licenses will also rise. Moreover, the adjustment will affect commercial driver licenses and various vehicle registrations, pushing the annual fee for private passenger vehicles from $38.75 to $46.25, among other increases.

The complete list of fee changes can be found here.

Love, Learning, and Liberation in 'Things We Never Got Over’

Lucy Score's "Things We Never Got Over" tells the compelling story of Naomi's unexpected journey in the small town of Knockemout, Virginia, after leaving her wedding. Stuck with her previously unknown niece, Naomi navigates new beginnings, including a romance with local Knox. Throughout, she learns critical life lessons about change, the importance of family, forgiveness, community support, healing, and finding one’s voice.

Here are the distilled essences of wisdom from Naomi's journey in Knockemout:

  • The Courage to Change: Naomi's audacious decision to not go through with her wedding is a testament to the importance of following one’s heart, despite societal pressures.

  • The Imperfections of Family: Despite a fraught relationship with her twin sister, Tina, Naomi comes to embrace the flawed yet unbreakable bond of family.

  • A New Leaf: Naomi’s relocation offers her the blank canvas she needs to repaint her life, discovering anew her purpose among the town's idiosyncratic inhabitants.

  • Unexpected Love: The spark between Naomi and Knox, the town's bartender/barber, serves as a reminder that love often arrives in the most unforeseen moments.

  • Authenticity and Vulnerability: In her new environment, Naomi learns the value of being true to oneself and the strength found in vulnerability.

  • The Power of Community: The warm embrace of the Knockemout community shows Naomi that belonging and support can be found in the most unexpected places.

  • The Act of Forgiveness: Naomi's journey underscores the healing that comes from forgiving oneself and others, paving the way for a brighter future.

  • Seeking Support: Naomi’s experiences highlight the importance of asking for help and leaning on others during challenging times.

  • The Process of Healing: The narrative honors the slow and often difficult process of healing from past traumas, celebrating each small victory along the way.

  • Finding One’s Voice: Naomi’s evolution is marked by her learning to advocate for herself and her values, using her newfound strength to impact the world around her.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
C) Pony Express

The Pony Express was born back when there were no message delivery and postal services as we know today to link the far west — and most especially, the new state of California — with the rest of the United States. Thanks to its dogged riders and diligent staff, the Pony Express revolutionized the speedy delivery of messages and packages. The mail service ultimately spurred the creation of catalogs and enabled people to purchase products which are delivered by horse.
