Dr. Adam Hartstone-Rose and his team from NC State University are conducting a rare study to observe animal behavior during the total solar eclipse on April 8.
This follows a significant 2017 study that revealed unusual animal behaviors. They will observe animals at a Texas zoo in the eclipse's path and have launched a citizen science project to collect nationwide data.
The study aims to deepen understanding of how celestial events like solar eclipses affect animal behavior. Read full story
Unsung Hero: The Software Engineer Who Could Have Saved the Internet
In a twist that reads like the plot of a cybersecurity thriller, Andres Freund, a San Francisco-based Microsoft engineer, may have single-handedly thwarted a significant cyberattack. This incident underscores the precarious nature of the internet's infrastructure, a complex, often ad-hoc assemblage of technology that, despite its fragility, underpins a substantial portion of the global economy.
Freund, a German-born software engineer specializing in PostgreSQL, an open-source database software, stumbled upon a potential cybersecurity disaster while performing routine maintenance. He discovered a backdoor in xz Utils, a part of the Linux operating system, which could have allowed hackers to gain unauthorized access to countless computers worldwide.
Freund's detection of the anomaly—a result of his keen observation and expertise—led to swift action to patch the vulnerability before it could be exploited. His actions have been lauded by tech leaders, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and cybersecurity experts, who have emphasized the potentially catastrophic consequences had the backdoor been utilized by malicious actors. Wegmans Pullout Prompts Financial Rethink for Cary's Fenton Development
Cary's Fenton development, an integral part of Cary's growth strategy, faces a pivotal adjustment to its development agreement.
This comes after the withdrawal of Wegmans, initially an anchor tenant, which impacted the developer's reimbursement for public infrastructure costs.
The Town Council will hold a public hearing to discuss "Amendment Number 1 to the Development Agreement for the Fenton Mixed-Use Development," aimed at ensuring the developer is compensated for the significant investments made in the project's infrastructure. The amendment seeks to preserve the objectives of the original agreement while adapting to current circumstances. Read Full Agenda and Public Notices

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
Marketed as the “Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling,” Twinkies are a beloved snack among children and adults alike. They were invented by James Alexander Dewar, a baker for the Continental Baking Company in Schiller Park, Illinois.
Like many inventions, Twinkies were a product of necessity, for a strawberry shortage led Dewar to fill his strawberry shortcakes with banana cream instead, which later became their own treat — Twinkies, a wonderfully delicious invention! National Twinkie Day is celebrated all across America on April 6.
