Puppy Love: Scientific Evidence Shows Dogs Improve Mental Health
The recent study published in PLOS One by Onyoo Yoo and colleagues at Konkuk University in Seoul demonstrates that certain interactions with dogs, such as playing, feeding, and walking, can positively affect human brain activity and emotional states.
Using EEG tests, the study identified increases in alpha and beta-band oscillations, indicators of mental relaxation and attention, respectively. These findings support the idea that spending time with dogs can have tangible benefits for mental health, adding a layer of scientific evidence to the anecdotal support for animal-assisted therapies.
While more research is needed, especially with larger and more diverse populations, the study is a promising step toward understanding the complex dynamics of human-animal relationships.
Aging Gracefully on the Run: Health Benefits for Senior Runners
Running stands out as an effective, accessible form of exercise that supports aging individuals in staying healthy and independent.
Despite facing challenges like decreased bone density and muscle mass, the elderly can still reap considerable benefits from running.
It lowers the risk of several diseases, enhances mental functions, and improves mobility, which is crucial for maintaining independence.
Critical to achieving these benefits is a tailored approach to training that acknowledges and adjusts for the physiological changes associated with aging.
Acupuncture Helps With Menstrual Cramps Safely and Well
Researchers looked into how well and safely acupuncture works for treating menstrual cramps. They checked how it did against no treatment, fake treatments, pain relievers like ibuprofen, and birth control pills.
The study found that acupuncture, where they stick tiny needles into the body, really helps lower the pain from menstrual cramps better than pain relievers and doing nothing.
A special kind of acupuncture with heat also worked better than pain relievers. The good effects of acupuncture seemed to last for a little while after the treatment.
Even though the studies weren't perfect, acupuncture looks like a good way to deal with menstrual cramps, offering a safe and effective choice compared to usual ways of managing pain. Read Full NIH Research Paper

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question πππ
C) Anna May Wong (1905-1961) Link to Bio
Hollywood has historically been a tough industry for actors of color, but Wong was able to find box-office success as a Chinese-American actress in the 1930s. Her decades-long career survived the transition from black-and-white silent films to talkies and technicolor. In 2022, she became the first Asian American to be featured on U.S. currency.
