North Carolina's Economy in 2024: Challenges and Opportunities

The economic forecast for 2024, according to NC State Economist Jeffrey Dorfman, anticipates slower growth with the potential for a mild to moderate recession.

Consumer spending on goods is likely to decline as people adjust to a post-pandemic economy, and high-paying job sectors may see layoffs. However, areas like healthcare and government are expected to continue adding jobs.

Interest rates are expected to fall, potentially easing some economic pressures. Read full story

Groundbreaking Drug Xolair Receives FDA Nod to Combat Food Allergies

Xolair, a medication developed by Genentech and Novartis, has been approved by the FDA to help reduce the risk of severe allergic reactions from accidental exposure to foods like milk, eggs, walnuts, and peanuts.

It is the first of its kind for treating multiple food allergies and is administered through injections every two to four weeks. While it doesn't allow patients to consume allergenic foods freely, it aims to lessen the severity of reactions.

Side effects include fever and possible anaphylaxis, with costs varying but potentially offset by insurance. This approval offers new hope to the millions affected by food allergies, marking a significant advancement in allergy treatment. Read full story
