Question: What is another name for the vitamin B1?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

I Almost Threw Out My Keurig. It Wasn't Broken.

Every cup from my Keurig started tasting weak, flat, stale — so I unplugged it and stuck it in a closet. Then I learned the dirty secret of grocery store K-Cups: by the time a pod reaches your kitchen, it's usually spent months going from factory to warehouse to truck to shelf. The flavor oils are long gone. Some brands even over-roast to hide it.

The fix wasn't a new machine. It was fresh pods from Angelino's, a family-owned L.A. roastery that roasts, packs, and ships within 3–5 days — straight to your door, from 39¢ a cup. Over 1,000,000 happy customers. 50+ flavors, no subscription required, and 15% off your first order, applied automatically at checkout.

Fine by Us:
Readers Cheer Paying Tickets in Groceries

Down the road in Raleigh, NC State tried something different with its parking tickets this fall. Through a program called Ticket to Table, students, faculty and staff could wipe out eligible citations of $60 or less by buying items from the Feed the Pack Food Pantry’s Amazon wishlist, with every item knocking $5 off the fine. A $60 ticket meant 12 donated items, and the proceeds went straight to students facing food insecurity. The submission window closed October 31, so we asked readers: is this a smart idea, or should a fine just be a fine?

Issue #1089 — "What do you think about NC State allowing parking fines to be forgiven through food pantry donations?"

Poll Results

❤️ Love it! It’s a creative way to help students in need: 62%
👏 Great idea! More universities should offer this: ~15%
⚖️ Support it, as long as donations match the value of the fine: ~11%
🚫 Parking fines should be paid, not exchanged for donations: ~6%
🤔 Interesting idea, but I’d like to see how well it works: ~4%
✍️ Other: ~2%
💰 I’d rather pay the fine and donate separately: 0%

This one wasn’t close. Nearly nine in ten readers backed the idea in some form, with a clear majority calling it a creative way to help students who are struggling to put food on the table. Another sizable group wants to see it spread to other campuses, which suggests readers see this less as a quirky one-off and more as a model worth copying.

The most supportive readers still had a practical streak. About one in ten said they’re on board as long as the donations match the value of the fine, and that’s exactly how NC State built it: $5 in forgiveness per $5 item. A small group held the line that a fine is a fine, and a few others want to see results before getting excited.

Perhaps the most telling number is the one at the bottom. Not a single reader said they’d rather pay the ticket and donate separately. When given the choice, Cary readers apparently prefer their good deeds bundled with a little relief.

Final Thoughts

Here’s to turning a bad day in the parking lot into a good day at the food pantry. Now if only someone could figure out how to do the same with speeding tickets.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Thiamin

Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamin (or spelled thiamine) and historically as aneurine. It helps convert food (specifically carbohydrates) into energy and supports nerve, muscle, and heart function. It dissolves in water and the body cannot store it in large amounts, meaning you need a fresh supply every day.

A severe lack of vitamin B1 can lead to conditions like beriberi (affecting the heart and nerves) or Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (affecting the brain and memory), which are often linked to poor nutrition or chronic alcohol use.
