Question: What does the medical acronym PET stand for?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON CARY ✨

Anniversary Month

This October, we're celebrating Cary Spotlight.

I Almost Threw Out My Keurig. It Wasn't Broken.

Every cup from my Keurig started tasting weak, flat, stale — so I unplugged it and stuck it in a closet. Then I learned the dirty secret of grocery store K-Cups: by the time a pod reaches your kitchen, it's usually spent months going from factory to warehouse to truck to shelf. The flavor oils are long gone. Some brands even over-roast to hide it.

The fix wasn't a new machine. It was fresh pods from Angelino's, a family-owned L.A. roastery that roasts, packs, and ships within 3–5 days — straight to your door, from 39¢ a cup. Over 1,000,000 happy customers. 50+ flavors, no subscription required, and 15% off your first order, applied automatically at checkout.

Black Creek Greenway Is Officially Reopened

Cary has officially reopened the entire 7.1-mile Black Creek Greenway after completing major renovations to a 2.5-mile section of the popular trail. Construction began in June 2024 and was originally expected to take approximately three years, but the town completed the work seven months ahead of schedule. The reopening restores a key recreational and transportation connection for walkers, runners and cyclists.

The renovation included widening the trail to 12 feet, improving drainage, adjusting curves for safer travel and adding a connection near Dynasty Drive. A new pedestrian bridge over Cary Parkway, which opened earlier this year, provides a safer crossing and features artwork by Vicki Scuri. Utility improvements were also completed as part of the project to help minimize future disruptions.

Cary officials expect the project to finish below its original construction bid of nearly $17.5 million, with final construction costs estimated at approximately $17.3 million. The early completion was made possible through more efficient construction scheduling and coordination with the contractor. Black Creek Greenway connects Fred G. Bond Metro Park with Old Reedy Creek Road and forms part of the larger East Coast Greenway network.

The reopening coincides with Cary surpassing 100 miles of greenways in 2026, a milestone reflecting the town's continued investment in outdoor recreation and transportation connections. Although the trail is already open, Cary plans to celebrate the improvements during the Teen Council's annual First Walk on January 1, 2027, at 10 a.m. at North Cary Park.

Older Dogs and Cats Get a Second Chance

The Wake County Animal Center is celebrating National Adopt a Senior Pet Month by reducing adoption fees for older dogs and cats throughout November. Dogs ages 8 and older can be adopted for $25, while cats in the same age group are available for just $5. The promotion is designed to help senior animals find loving homes and encourage residents to consider adopting an older companion.

Senior pets can be an excellent fit for households looking for animals with more established personalities and potentially calmer routines. Many older dogs and cats are past the demanding stages of puppyhood or kittenhood and may already be familiar with living in a home. Wake County officials hope the reduced fees will help more families recognize the benefits of adopting an older animal.

At the time of the announcement, the shelter reported 92 dogs, two puppies, 34 cats, two kittens and one bird at its Raleigh facility. Additional animals were living in foster homes, including 34 dogs, 35 cats, 11 kittens and three rabbits. Among the animals in the shelter and foster program were 14 senior dogs and one senior cat. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations.

The Wake County Animal Center is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh, near Interstate 440 and New Bern Avenue. The shelter is open for adoptions every day from noon to 6 p.m. Residents interested in adopting should consider their household's needs, ask about an animal's health and temperament, and be prepared for the long-term responsibilities of pet ownership.

What Wake County Residents Should Know

Courage Finish Strong as Sanchez Makes NWSL History

The North Carolina Courage closed their 2026 season with a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Denver Summit Sunday evening at First Horizon Stadium in Cary. Despite the win, a victory by the Seattle Reign kept North Carolina out of the playoffs, ending a memorable season filled with record-breaking performances and incredible fan support.

- ⚽ Late winner delivers three points: A stoppage-time own goal by Kaleigh Kurtz gave the Courage a thrilling 1-0 victory. Ashley Sanchez created the chance with a dangerous ball across the goalmouth that Kurtz accidentally redirected into the net. North Carolina finished the season 14-13-3, placing ninth in the NWSL standings.

- 🏆 Sanchez wins the Golden Boot: Ashley Sanchez capped an incredible season with 20 goals, tying the NWSL single-season scoring record and claiming the league's Golden Boot award. She also added five assists, giving her 25 goal contributions, the second-highest single-season total in league history.

- 🧤 Sheridan reaches another milestone: Kailen Sheridan recorded her 700th NWSL regular-season save during the first half, becoming just the third goalkeeper in league history to reach that mark. Her 51st career clean sheet also moved her into second place on the NWSL's all-time list.

- 🏟️ Cary fans break more records: A crowd of 10,803 packed First Horizon Stadium for the Courage's fifth sellout of 2026, setting a new club record. The crowd was also the second-largest in team history. Before this season, the Courage had recorded only four sellouts in their entire history.

The playoff dream ends: North Carolina needed both a win and help elsewhere to reach the postseason. Although the Courage took care of business against Denver, Seattle's 1-0 victory over the Orlando Pride ended their playoff hopes.

The Courage may have missed the postseason, but with a Golden Boot winner, historic milestones and record-setting crowds, 2026 gave Cary soccer fans plenty to celebrate and even more reasons to look forward to next season!

Silver Has Beaten Gold Before. It's Doing It Again.

From 1974 to 1987, silver more than doubled gold's returns. After 2008, it beat gold five-fold in three years. Since March 2020, silver is up 402% against gold's 186%. Our research team's free playbook explains why, and how the team would position.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Positron Emission Tomography

In medical contexts, PET stands for Positron Emission Tomography. A PET scan is an advanced nuclear medicine imaging test used to visualize the metabolic and cellular activity of your tissues and organs. Unlike CT or MRI scans, which primarily show the physical structure or shape of your body, a PET scan focuses on how your body is functioning at a biochemical level.
