Question: Apia is the capital of which country?

Let’s Have an Honest Conversation About Breasts

Breasts are among the most talked about and medically researched parts of the human body, yet many of us are embarrassed to discuss our breast health openly.

Allure Perspectives, a new podcast hosted by Allure editor-in-chief Jessica Cruel, spends its first season exploring how breasts intersect with beauty, health, identity, sexuality, and culture. Episodes feature Olivia Munn on the test she says to take even if your mammogram is clear, sex educator Ericka Hart on reclaiming her body after breast cancer, and a Beverly Hills surgeon on why GLP-1s are driving a surge in breast lifts. All episodes available now.

Cary Shares Halloween Safety Tips Every Family Should Know

With Halloween taking place Saturday, October 31, Cary officials are encouraging residents to prioritize safety while enjoying trick-or-treating and neighborhood celebrations. Cary Public Works, Police and Fire departments are reminding families to plan their routes, supervise younger children and take precautions to remain visible after dark.

Pedestrian safety is a major focus of the town's recommendations. Trick-or-treaters should use sidewalks and designated crosswalks, avoid crossing between parked vehicles and stay alert for traffic. Reflective materials, flashlights and glow sticks can help drivers see children, while properly fitting costumes can reduce the risk of falls.

Drivers are being asked to slow down in residential neighborhoods and watch carefully for pedestrians, particularly near intersections, driveways and parked cars. Residents handing out candy can contribute by keeping walkways well-lit and free of obstacles. Parents should also check children's candy before allowing them to eat it.

Cary does not establish official trick-or-treating hours, meaning neighborhoods may have their own recommended schedules or organized activities. Families can find additional guidance on the town's Halloween Safety webpage.

Action Steps for a Safer Halloween

  • 🎃 Plan ahead: Choose a familiar route and check neighborhood trick-or-treating schedules.

  • 🔦 Stay visible: Carry a flashlight and add reflective materials to costumes.

  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Supervise children: Ensure younger trick-or-treaters are accompanied by an adult.

  • 🚶 Cross carefully: Use crosswalks and avoid walking between parked cars.

  • 🚗 Drive cautiously: Slow down and watch for children in residential areas.

  • 🏡 Prepare your home: Keep outdoor lights on and walkways clear.

  • 🍬 Check candy: Inspect treats before children eat them.

What Should Police Do First in a Mental Health Crisis?

Earlier this week, a welfare check near Cary’s Lochmere neighborhood turned into an hours-long police search that ended Monday afternoon with an arrest, no shots fired and no injuries. The incident put a nearby school under a precautionary lockdown and raised a question many communities are wrestling with: when police respond to someone in a mental health crisis who may also be armed, what should come first?

Issue #1100 — "What should be the top priority when police respond to a potentially dangerous mental health crisis?"

Poll Results

🛡️ Protecting nearby residents and public safety: 41%
🤝 Using trained crisis negotiators to de-escalate the situation: 26%
🚑 Coordinating police and mental health professionals: 24%
⚖️ Balancing individual rights with public safety: 6%
🧠 Providing immediate mental health crisis support: 3%
📋 Ensuring transparency and accountability after the incident: 0%

Public safety was the clear single-answer favorite, with roughly four in ten readers saying the first job is protecting the people nearby. That instinct makes sense in a situation like this one, where a school went into lockdown and neighbors were told to stay alert.

But look a little closer and a second story appears. Half of respondents chose an answer focused on how police respond: de-escalation through trained negotiators or a coordinated approach that brings mental health professionals into the room. Taken together, those approach-focused answers edged out public safety as a group. Readers seem to see these goals as connected rather than competing: a calm, skilled response is often what keeps everyone safe.

Only a handful of readers chose balancing individual rights or immediate mental health support as the top priority, and no one picked post-incident transparency. That doesn’t necessarily mean readers don’t care about accountability; the question asked for a first priority, and in the moment, most attention goes to the situation unfolding.

This is a snapshot rather than a survey of Cary as a whole. Still, it suggests readers want both safety and skill at the table when these calls come in.

Final Thoughts

Thanks to everyone who took the time to share a thoughtful answer on a difficult topic. And to everyone involved in Monday’s response, from officers to school staff to the neighbors who stayed patient: we’re grateful it ended the way it did.

Chocolate Wins Cary Spotlight’s Halloween Candy Poll

Saturday is Halloween itself, so here are the updated pieces. I also fixed a typo in the results header and corrected the dentist reference, since that story ran in the issue where the poll appeared, not the one these results land in.

🎃 Intro

Happy Halloween, Cary! Tonight the candy arrives by the bucketful. In Issue #1101, a local dentist shared tips for keeping kids’ teeth healthy through the sugar rush, so we asked readers to be honest: which Halloween candy would you have the hardest time giving up, even if it’s not the best for your teeth? It wasn’t close.

"Which Halloween Candy Would You Have the Hardest Time Giving Up?" poll (Issue #1101):

Poll Results

🍫 Chocolate bars and chocolate treats: 69.23%
🍎 I’d rather skip the candy for a healthier treat: ~11.5%
✍️ Other (please specify): ~7.7%
🍭 Lollipops and hard candy: ~3.8%
🐻 Gummy bears and gummy worms: ~3.8%
🍮 Caramels and chewy taffy: ~3.8%
🍋 Sour candy like Sour Patch Kids: 0%

Chocolate didn’t just win, it ran away with the bag. Better than two out of three readers said it’s the treat they’d fight hardest to keep, and the write-ins only reinforced the point. Both “Other” votes went to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, with one reader admitting they might technically belong under the chocolate heading anyway. Count those in spirit and chocolate’s grip gets even tighter.

A small but principled group said they’d rather skip the candy altogether for something healthier, which our dentist friend would surely applaud. Gummies, lollipops, and caramels each picked up a single loyal fan. Sour candy, meanwhile, was shut out completely. Sorry, Sour Patch Kids.

This is a friendly snapshot rather than a scientific verdict, but it’s hard to argue with the direction.

💬 In Your Words

❝

“Reese’s cups, although, maybe they are one of the good ones under the chocolate heading!”

❝

“Reese Candy / Cups”

❝

“Snickers are my favorite”

Final Thoughts

Enjoy your Halloween, Cary. Hand out the good stuff, save a peanut butter cup for yourself, and maybe brush a little longer tonight.
