Wake County Secures $5.8 Million to Help Laid-Off Workers Find New Jobs
A Wake County-led workforce development board has received a $5.8 million federal grant to help laid-off workers return to employment. The three-year initiative aims to serve 628 displaced workers across 15 North Carolina counties, including Wake and neighboring communities. The program will focus on preparing job seekers for opportunities in growing industries such as advanced manufacturing and construction.
The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Labor's Rapid Reskill Dislocated Worker program. Workforce officials plan to respond to company layoffs within 30 days, helping affected employees develop personalized plans for finding new work. Participants will also be able to use AI-powered career tools through NCCareers.org to connect their experience and skills with available positions.
Another major component involves partnerships with employers and local education providers. The program will help establish Registered Apprenticeships that offer hands-on workplace training while also supporting shorter courses that lead to industry-recognized credentials. These opportunities are intended to help workers qualify for jobs that may require different skills from their previous positions.
The Capital Area Workforce Development Board, which serves Wake, Chatham, Johnston, Lee and Orange counties, will lead the effort alongside the Mid-Carolina and Lumber River workforce development boards. NC LEAD and the North Carolina Department of Commerce's Division of Workforce Solutions are also participating. The award is part of a larger $95.5 million federal investment supporting 20 projects across 17 states.

A: Peru
The Nasca Lines (or Nazca Lines) are located in Peru. They were etched into the desert floor between 500 BCE and 500 CE by the pre-Columbian Nasca and Paracas cultures. Ancient people created them by removing the dark, iron-oxide-coated pebbles on the surface to reveal the lighter-colored clay and sand underneath.
The collection includes thousands of straight lines and geometric shapes, as well as over 70 massive biomorphs depicting animals and plants, such as a monkey, hummingbird, spider, and condor.
Due to their historic value and the mystery surrounding their exact ritual or astronomical purpose, they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994
