Farewell to a Cary Classic: Ashworth Drugs Closes After 67 Years

For over six decades, Ashworth Drugs has served as a cornerstone of downtown Cary, offering not just pharmaceutical services but also a space for community engagement through its iconic soda fountain.

Founded by Ralph Ashworth and his wife Daphne, the store has witnessed Cary's growth from a small town to a city of over 182,000 people.

The retirement of Paul Ashworth, the second-generation manager, and the lack of a willing or financially able successor has led to the difficult decision to close the business.

Before its final closure, the store will briefly reopen to allow the community to purchase remaining stock and enjoy the soda fountain one last time. Ralph Ashworth, deeply intertwined with the Cary community, plans to repurpose the building, ensuring it continues to contribute to the town's vibrant downtown area. Read Full Story

Since his arrival in 2006 as a rescue, Gus became known as "Mama Gus," nurturing the museum's younger bears. His passing has left a profound impact on the museum community, with staff and visitors mourning the loss of a beloved figure.
