Rising Costs Prompt North Carolina to Drop Popular Weight-Loss Medications

The North Carolina State Health Plan's board has voted to discontinue covering GLP-1 weight-loss medications after the cost of these drugs surged to $102 million last year, making up 10% of the plan's total drug expenditures.

This decision affects a wide range of beneficiaries, including state employees, teachers, and retirees, nearly 740,000 people in total. While the plan will still cover GLP-1 drugs for diabetes treatment, the exclusion of weight-loss medications comes amid warnings from CVS Caremark that premiums would need to increase significantly to cover these costs.

The manufacturer of Wegovy, Novo Nordisk, criticized the decision, highlighting the tension between economic considerations and medical care.

This situation is emblematic of a broader challenge faced by state health plans nationwide as they navigate the high costs of new, effective weight-loss treatments.

Penicillin Shortage Complicates Fight Against Rising Syphilis Infections in US

The US is facing an alarming rise in syphilis infections, with the CDC reporting a 17% increase in cases in 2022, bringing the total to 207,000, the highest in over 70 years. 

This resurgence has been linked to cuts in public health funding and increased drug use and unprotected sex. A national syphilis task force has been formed to enhance testing and treatment, and efforts are underway to develop a rapid syphilis test.

Syphilis poses severe risks, especially to pregnant women, leading to numerous stillbirths and infant deaths.

The shortage of penicillin G benzathine has led to the importation of an alternative from Europe and a recommendation for doxycycline as a secondary treatment option, although concerns remain about patient compliance with the treatment regimen. Read Full Story
