What’s New at the 2026 NC State Fair?
The 2026 North Carolina State Fair begins Oct. 15 and runs through Oct. 25, bringing several new attractions to the fairgrounds.
The centerpiece is the 230-foot America 250 Wheel, the tallest Ferris wheel in State Fair history. It features 45 six-person gondolas and will replace the previous Skygazer wheel. Two additional rides, Twin Twister and Casino, will also make their fair debuts.
A longtime State Fair tradition is also returning. The country ham competition will be held for the first time in 27 years, with judging, cooking demonstrations and curing lessons scheduled for Oct. 15 at Dorton Arena.
Military Appreciation Day takes place Oct. 21, while the new Midway Event Center will host the opening ceremony Oct. 16 and provide space for food vendors and seating throughout the fair. N.C. State Fair

Could Drought Be Putting Wake County Trees at Risk?
A Wake County homeowner reported two unusual tree-related incidents, including a roughly 100-year-old tree falling onto her home and a large branch later falling onto her truck. Neither incident occurred during a major storm or period of strong winds, raising questions about why apparently healthy trees and limbs can suddenly fall.
The events brought attention to a phenomenon known as sudden branch drop or falling limb syndrome. NC State expert Kelly Oten explained that arborists are familiar with the problem, but predicting it is difficult. There is no single known cause, and potential contributing factors can include pests, bacteria, disease and environmental stress.
Drought may be another contributing factor. Prolonged dry conditions can place significant stress on trees and their root systems, potentially making them more vulnerable to failure. The concern comes as more of Wake County has moved into severe drought conditions and the water supply pool at Falls Lake has dropped about 10% over the past month.
Even when rain returns, drought-related problems may not immediately disappear. Trees can continue experiencing the effects of prolonged environmental stress for years, making it important for homeowners to pay attention to changes in mature trees even after conditions improve.
Potential warning signs include individual limbs or sections of a tree losing leaves while the rest of the canopy appears healthy. Homeowners concerned about trees near houses, driveways or other structures can consider contacting an arborist with an ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. While an assessment cannot predict every failure, these professionals are trained to identify potential hazards.
Homeowners can also help trees during dry periods by providing deep watering and placing mulch around the base to help the soil retain moisture. The larger takeaway is that drought damage is not always easy to see, and a tree that looks healthy from the outside may still be experiencing significant stress.

A stalactite hangs from the roof of a limestone cave. An easy way to remember the difference between cave formations is that stalactites hang "tight" to the ceiling, while stalagmites grow up from the ground (they "might" reach the top one day).
These icicle-shaped formations are created over thousands of years as water containing dissolved minerals drips from the cave roof, leaving tiny deposits of calcium carbonate behind.
