Rabid Bat Found in Raleigh:
What Cary Residents Should Know
A bat found in Raleigh’s Shelley Lake has tested positive for rabies, serving as a reminder for Cary and Wake County residents to avoid handling bats or other unfamiliar wildlife.
According to Raleigh officials, residents spotted the bat struggling in Shelley Lake and rescued it from the water. The bat later died while being transported to a wildlife rehabilitator and subsequently tested positive for rabies.
Officials said there was minimal to no contact between the bat and the people involved. It was Raleigh’s second rabid bat reported this year and the city’s third positive rabies case overall.
While the incident happened in Raleigh, Cary residents share the same Wake County wildlife environment. Bats are an important part of the local ecosystem, but a bat that is on the ground, unable to fly, active in an unusual place, or behaving abnormally should not be handled.
🦇 Tips for Cary Residents
Do not touch or attempt to rescue a bat or other wild animal, even if it appears injured, sick, or in distress.
Keep your distance from unfamiliar animals, including stray cats and dogs.
Keep your pets' rabies vaccinations current.
Contact a veterinarian if you believe your pet may have encountered a bat or other potentially rabid animal.
Don't feed stray or unknown animals.
Don't leave pet food outdoors overnight, where it can attract wildlife.
Secure garbage and food in containers with tight-fitting lids.
Never release a bat if you wake up and find one in a room with a sleeping person, child, or someone who may not be able to reliably say whether contact occurred. Contact local health or animal-control authorities for guidance.

Cary Family Displaced After Significant House Fire
A Cary home was significantly damaged by a fire Saturday afternoon, displacing its occupants but causing no reported injuries.
The fire was reported shortly before 4 p.m. in the 900 block of Strathorn Drive, just south of Highcroft Drive Elementary School. The incident occurred around the same time storms were moving through the area.
Cary firefighters arrived to find an active fire at the house and spent nearly an hour bringing it under control. Crews remained at the scene beyond 6 p.m.
No one was inside the home when the fire started, and no injuries were reported. The occupants have been displaced because of the extent of the damage.
Cary officials are investigating what caused the fire. No cause had been announced at the time of the report. Read Full Story
Sanchez Makes NWSL History
in Courage’s 6-0 Rout
The North Carolina Courage delivered an offensive explosion Sunday, routing the Chicago Stars 6-0 in Evanston. Ashley Sanchez stole the show with her first career hat trick, breaking the NWSL single-season scoring record for an American player and climbing to 18 goals this season.
⚽ Sanchez makes history: Ashley Sanchez opened the scoring in the 11th minute with her record-breaking 16th goal of the season. She added a penalty in the 69th minute and a header in the 81st to complete her first professional hat trick and reach 18 goals, just two shy of the overall NWSL single-season record.
🔥 Sanchez and Ijeh set another record: Sanchez and Evelyn Ijeh now have a combined 29 goals this season, establishing a new NWSL single-season scoring record for a pair of teammates. Ijeh also contributed an assist in Sunday's blowout.
🌟 New names join the scoring party: Chioma Okafor scored her first professional goal in the 16th minute before assisting Shinomi Koyama on her first goal of the season. Ryan Williams followed just two minutes later with her second career goal, helping turn the match into a rout.
🥅 Courage dominate from start to finish: North Carolina scored six unanswered goals and kept a clean sheet for one of its most convincing victories of the season. New signing Bia also made her NWSL debut.
With Sanchez chasing the league’s overall scoring record and the Courage attack firing on all cylinders, Cary soccer fans have plenty of reasons to keep watching this fall.
