Fatal Cary Crash Draws Attention to Pedestrian Crossing Near Koka Booth
Cary police say 76-year-old Soile Lazarz died Wednesday morning after an SUV struck her in a crosswalk on Ederlee Drive near Koka Booth Amphitheatre.
Lazarz regularly walked the route and was remembered by her family as a journalist, writer, avid reader and devoted mother and grandmother who maintained strong ties to her Swedish heritage.
The SUV's driver remained at the scene, and no charges had been filed at the time of the report. Police were continuing to investigate the crash.
A pedestrian hybrid beacon is already planned for the crossing as part of a state-funded project, but construction is currently scheduled for fall 2028.

Cary Town Council Meets Tonight
The Cary Town Council meets Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Cary Town Hall. The agenda includes several items with potential community impact, from a proposed pause on new data centers to major improvements at Cary Tennis Park.
🏢 18-Month Moratorium on Data Centers
One of the biggest items is a public hearing on a proposed 18-month moratorium on new data center development applications in Cary.
The pause would also cover cryptocurrency mining operations and give the Town time to determine where these uses should be allowed and develop rules addressing issues including noise, water consumption, energy demand and site design.
🎾 More Than $5 Million in Cary Tennis Park Improvements
Council will consider two major projects at Cary Tennis Park. One would replace aging asphalt courts with longer-lasting post-tension concrete courts for $4.14 million.
A separate $1.149 million project would replace lighting on courts 1 through 12 with new LED lighting designed to meet standards for collegiate and professional nighttime competition.
🏓 Nearly $1 Million in State Funding for Pro Pickleball
Cary and the Professional Pickleball Association have been awarded up to $984,850 in state grant funding connected to the major PPA tournament coming to Cary Tennis Park from Aug. 31 through Sept. 6.
Under the proposal, as much as $949,600 would go to the PPA for qualifying expenses, while $35,250 would offset Cary's already budgeted event costs.
🚗 Parking Could Disappear Along Part of East Cedar Street
Council will consider eliminating all on-street parking on East Cedar Street between North Academy Street and Walker Street. Town staff says the change would improve traffic flow and reduce congestion as downtown Cary continues to grow.
🚲 Cary's Bike and Parks Plans Could Become Part of Its Long-Term Vision
Council is being asked to approve updates to the Imagine Cary Community Plan that would incorporate Cary's Bike Plan and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources System Plan into the Town's comprehensive planning framework.
The Planning and Zoning Board unanimously recommended approval.
🏠 Proposed Development at Jacobs Creek
Council will hold a public hearing on a request to annex 4312 Jacobs Creek Lane. The annexation is associated with a rezoning request that could allow up to 16 detached homes and provide access to Cary utilities.
No final annexation decision is expected Thursday.
💧 Other Major Spending Items
The consent agenda also includes several significant contracts, including $905,200 for preliminary engineering tied to a future expansion of the Western Wake Regional Water Reclamation Facility, up to $2.5 million annually for residuals and biosolids management, up to $1.2 million for Aquastar water meters and radios, and approximately $2.1 million for Town insurance premiums.

Bottom line: The proposed data center moratorium, $5.3 million in Cary Tennis Park upgrades, state funding for professional pickleball, and proposed downtown parking changes are among the items most likely to be of broad public interest Thursday night.
