Cary Neighbors Can Help Restock This Local Emergency Food Pantry
The Mama Edna Project in Cary is asking neighbors to help restock its emergency food pantry as local families continue to seek food assistance.
The nonprofit, located at 1393 Maynard Road SE, has released its most-needed pantry items for Aug. 23 through Aug. 29. Organizers are encouraging residents to consider picking up an extra item or two during their next grocery trip.
Most-needed items this week include:
🛒 Costco or Food Lion gift cards, which allow volunteers to purchase items when supplies run low
🍗 Ground pork, chicken, or turkey
🍚 1- to 3-pound bags of white rice
🫘 Dried black, red, or pinto beans
🍅 Canned diced tomatoes
🥫 Canned corn, peas, or beans
🌽 Maseca, flour, or cane sugar
🧈 Cooking oil or butter
🥣 Oatmeal or cereal
The organization says additional pantry staples are also useful, including tomato products, tomato sauce, tomato paste, salt and pepper, garlic powder, cumin, baking mixes, and peanut butter and jelly.
The Mama Edna Project works to address food insecurity and help Cary-area families gain access to healthy food options.
For residents who want to help, adding even a few pantry staples to the shopping cart can provide practical assistance to a neighbor who needs it.

Wake Schools Target Chronic Absenteeism
More than 117,000 Wake County students on the traditional calendar returned to classrooms Monday for the start of the new school year.
One of WCPSS's priorities this year is reducing chronic absenteeism. About 18 percent of district students are considered chronically absent, meaning they miss at least 10 percent of their enrolled school days.
School leaders say attendance matters even when students can make up assignments online because missing class also means missing direct instruction and interaction with teachers. Statewide, approximately 380,000 North Carolina students are considered chronically absent.
Families will also see a change in school safety terminology this year. WCPSS has replaced its color-coded emergency system with a Standard Response Protocol that uses action words to communicate what students and staff should do. Read Full Story

Sanchez’s Late Heroics Lift Courage Past Boston
The North Carolina Courage gave Cary fans plenty of late-night drama Saturday, beating the Boston Legacy 2-1 at First Horizon Stadium. Ashley Sanchez stole the show with two goals, including a record-setting winner deep into stoppage time.
North Carolina Courage 2, Boston Legacy 1: Ashley Sanchez opened the scoring in the 10th minute, curling a shot into the far post after an assist from Feli Rauch. Boston tied the match in stoppage time, but the Courage still had one more big moment coming.
Sanchez makes NWSL history: After Maycee Bell drew a foul in the box, Sanchez converted the penalty at 106:50 to seal the victory. It was the latest goal in NWSL regular-season history and pushed the Courage to a 10-7-3 record.
Golden Boot race heats up: Sanchez’s brace gave her 13 goals this season, moving her into the lead in the NWSL Golden Boot race. She is also just one goal away from tying the Courage’s single-season scoring record.
Big milestones in front of 8,050 fans: Rauch celebrated her 50th NWSL regular-season appearance with her third assist of the season. Meanwhile, Sanchez and Evelyn Ijeh have combined for 23 goals, just three shy of the league record for goals by a pair of teammates in one season.
With record-setting goals, Golden Boot drama and 8,050 fans in the stands, Cary once again showed it knows how to put on a memorable sports night.
