Cary Man Turns $2 Into $200,000 Lottery Win
A Cary man has two things on his shopping list after turning a $2 lottery play into a $200,000 prize: a Toyota and a party.
Prabin Kurmi won the top prize Monday while playing the North Carolina Education Lottery's 20 Years Celebration Digital Instant Game. According to lottery officials, the odds of winning the $200,000 top prize were 1 in 20 million.
Kurmi visited lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Tuesday to collect his winnings. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $144,021.
He plans to put some of the money toward a Toyota while also setting aside enough to celebrate his good fortune with a party.
Remarkably, this isn't Kurmi's first significant lottery win. Last year, he won more than $22,000 playing Carolina Keno.
His latest victory means the Cary resident has now collected more than $220,000 in lottery prizes in less than two years.
You just won $200,000. What's the FIRST thing you're doing?
Meet Slobberin' Sauce, NC State's Answer to the Great BBQ Divide

Credit: NC State
NC State is taking on one of North Carolina's oldest debates with a new barbecue sauce designed to bring Eastern and Western-style fans to the same table.
The university has launched NC State Slobberin' Sauce, an officially licensed barbecue sauce developed with Dr. Chris DePerno, a professor of fisheries, wildlife and conservation biology at NC State.
DePerno began making his own barbecue sauce more than 15 years ago, gradually refining batches served to family and friends. His recipe eventually became Dr. D's Original Barbeque Sauce, featuring a combination of sweet, smoky, tangy, and peppery flavors.
Slobberin' Sauce takes inspiration from both of North Carolina's major barbecue traditions. It combines the tomato-based character associated with Western North Carolina barbecue sauce with the vinegar-forward flavors traditionally found in Eastern North Carolina.
There's also an educational benefit behind every bottle. Royalties from the university's trademark licensing program and sales of Slobberin' Sauce will help support NC State student scholarships.
The sauce joins a growing lineup of NC State-branded food and beverage products. The university is already known for Howling Cow ice cream and has collaborated on products including coffee, snacks, wine, and beer.
For North Carolinians who have spent years choosing sides in the great barbecue sauce debate, NC State is betting there's room for a little Wolfpack compromise.
Just curious…
