The Cary Theater has been a fixture of downtown Cary since 1946, when it opened as the town's very first indoor movie theater. After years as a clothing store, an auto parts shop, and even a recording studio, the building got a full renovation in 2014 and reopened as the community's own art house cinema. Today the 176-seat theater sits right on Chatham Street, welcoming neighbors in for a night out without ever leaving town.
There's always something playing at The Cary. You can catch independent films, classic movies, and documentaries on the big screen, or settle in for live music, stand-up comedy, and improv shows. The theater also hosts a monthly storyteller club and puts on can't-miss annual events, including the BEYOND short film and screenplay festival each fall and the family-friendly Zombiepalooza short film contest every October.
What makes The Cary special is how easy it is to make a whole evening of it. Grab popcorn or coffee from BREW Coffee Bar in the lobby, then walk to dinner at one of the nearby downtown restaurants before or after the show. Joining the Cary Film Circle gets you discounted tickets and early access to shows, and the fully accessible building means everyone in the family can enjoy a movie night together.
