Five Signs It's Time to Talk to Your Doctor About Memory Loss

Misplacing your keys or forgetting someone's name from time to time is a normal part of aging. But when memory problems begin interfering with daily life, experts say it's time to talk with your doctor.

Normal age-related memory changes typically involve occasional lapses that don't prevent someone from living independently. For example, forgetting a word but remembering it later, misplacing glasses, or needing extra help with new technology are all common experiences.

More concerning symptoms include getting lost in familiar places, asking the same questions repeatedly, struggling with tasks like managing finances or following familiar recipes, or placing everyday items in unusual locations. Sudden changes in mood, personality, or judgment can also be warning signs that deserve medical evaluation.

Experts say early evaluation is important because many memory concerns have treatable causes, and identifying problems early can improve care and planning.

Normal Memory Changes

🧠 Forgetting a word or name but remembering it later.

🔑 Occasionally misplacing keys, glasses, or other everyday items.

🔁 Asking the same questions repeatedly.

💵 Having trouble managing money or following familiar recipes.
