Thinking About Buying an E-Bike?
Know the Rules Before You Ride
With electric bikes becoming increasingly popular, the Town of Cary is reminding residents that not every electric ride is legally considered an e-bike, and where you can ride depends on the type of vehicle you own.
Under North Carolina law, a legal electric-assisted bicycle must have fully operable pedals, a motor rated at 750 watts or less, and a throttle-assisted top speed of 20 mph or less. These are commonly known as Class 2 e-bikes.
Cary, Raleigh, and Johnston County all allow Class 2 e-bikes on their greenways. Because they meet the state's definition of an electric-assisted bicycle, they are treated much like traditional bicycles. Riders do not need a driver's license, vehicle registration, or insurance.
However, electric motorcycles, dirt bikes, and higher-powered e-motos often look similar but are not considered e-bikes under North Carolina law. Vehicles without operable pedals, with motors exceeding 750 watts, or capable of traveling faster than 20 mph using the throttle are generally prohibited on greenways and trails that ban motorized vehicles.
Town officials encourage anyone shopping for an electric bike to confirm it's labeled as a Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 e-bike before purchasing. Choosing the right model will help ensure it can legally be ridden where you plan to ride.

Cary Encourages Water Conservation as Drought Conditions Continue

Despite ongoing drought conditions in parts of North Carolina, Cary remains under its Year-Round Water Conservation stage, meaning residents should continue following the town's alternate-day watering schedule.
Cary's water supply comes from Jordan Lake, and town officials say current conditions do not require additional restrictions. However, residents are encouraged to conserve water and avoid unnecessary waste.
Current watering rules
💧 Even-numbered addresses: Water on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday
🌱 Odd-numbered addresses: Water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
🚫 No automated spray irrigation on Mondays
💦 Hand watering and drip irrigation are allowed any day of the week.
The town also requires rain sensors on automatic irrigation systems and prohibits water waste.
If drought conditions worsen or the community's water supply declines, Cary could move to stricter stages that would further limit outdoor watering and, eventually, some indoor water use.
For now, officials say residents can help protect the community's long-term water supply by following the year-round schedule and practicing water conservation whenever possible. Learn more, carync.gov/drought
