Large Tree Crashes Into Cary Home
A large tree crashed into a home on the 200 block of Shotts Avenue in Cary, causing significant damage to the second floor, according to town officials.
The Cary Fire Department responded after receiving reports that a tree had fallen onto the house. When crews arrived, they found extensive damage to a large portion of the home's second level.
A man was inside the home when the tree fell but was not injured. Officials did not provide additional details about what caused the tree to fall or whether the home was left uninhabitable.
Wake at Home Program Targets Homelessness With Rental Assistance
Wake County officials estimate that more than 1,000 people experience homelessness each night, staying in shelters or outdoor encampments. The new Wake at Home initiative is intended to reduce that number by helping people transition into stable housing.
The program's first phase includes a $22 million investment that will provide rental assistance to more than 400 households and flexible financial support to approximately 1,000 households. It also funds services such as healthcare to improve housing stability.
Rather than building new housing, the initiative focuses on connecting residents with existing affordable rental opportunities throughout the county.
Phase One will run through December 2027. Afterward, county leaders plan to begin Phase Two, which will focus on identifying and implementing strategies to prevent homelessness before it occurs.

Spain Wins World Cup as USA Rugby Eagles Win in Cary
It was a championship weekend for global sports, with Spain lifting the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy and the USA Men's Eagles completing an unbeaten run through the opening stage of the Nations Cup. Here's a look at the biggest international sports stories of the week.
⚽ Spain crowned World Cup champions: Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after Argentina was reduced to 10 players following Enzo Fernández's red card. Spain finished the tournament having conceded just one goal in seven matches.
⚽ Tournament honors announced: Spain dominated the individual awards as Rodri won the Golden Ball, Unai Simón claimed the Golden Glove, and Pau Cubarsí was named Best Young Player. Kylian Mbappé of France earned the Golden Boot, becoming the first player to win the award twice. England finished third after a thrilling 6-4 victory over France.
🏉 USA Eagles finish 3-for-3: The USA Men's Eagles defeated Spain 29-22 in Cary, North Carolina, to remain unbeaten through the opening phase of the Nations Cup. The victory followed earlier wins over Portugal and Zimbabwe, leaving the Eagles atop Pool A and building momentum toward the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
🏉 Balanced attack lifts the Eagles: Tries from Mitch Wilson, Paddy Ryan, Julian Roberts, and Perry Mayo powered the United States to victory, while Luke Carty added a late penalty kick to seal the result. Head coach Scott Lawrence praised his team's resilience while emphasizing there's still work to do before facing Argentina XV on August 15 in Fort Lauderdale.
From soccer's biggest stage to an encouraging run for the USA Eagles, it was another memorable week for international sports as champions were crowned and new momentum continued to build.
