NC’s Statewide School Safety Program to Test for Lead and Asbestos
The "Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids" program in North Carolina, a collaboration between RTI International and state health and education departments, aims to safeguard students by testing for lead in water and assessing for lead paint and asbestos in schools.
Central to the program is the systematic testing of water for lead at every tap used for drinking or cooking in public and charter schools throughout the state.
The program, which is free for schools, has already enrolled over 100 schools, with remedial actions underway for those with detected lead levels.
Warming Hearts and Homes: Triangle Volunteers Respond to Winter Chill
Community groups and volunteers in the Triangle area are actively supporting those affected by the dropping temperatures, providing warm shelters and assistance with food and heating costs.
As North Carolina experiences a cold spell, organizations in the Triangle area, including Saint John's Metropolitan Community Church and Meals on Wheels Wake County, are offering critical support. They provide warm sleeping spaces, food, space heaters, and financial aid for heating bills to the homeless and homebound. Read full story.

Simply Done Concierge: Cary's Answer to Balancing Busy Lifestyles
In Cary, a revolution in personal assistance is unfolding. Simply Done Concierge, a fledgling yet flourishing business established in 2022 by Mary Stocks, is redefining the concept of personal concierge services. With a clientele already numbering 50 in just over a year, Simply Done is not just a business; it's a lifeline for busy residents and work-from-home professionals.
Mary Stocks, with over 34 years of experience in business administration and a lifetime of expertise in organization and home management, saw a niche in Cary's bustling community. Her vision was not just to start a business but to create a legacy that empowers, particularly women, whether in kickstarting their businesses or simplifying their daily lives.
The services offered by Simply Done are as varied as the needs of Cary's residents. From pet care, including dog walking and vet visits, to running errands and managing homes, Simply Done covers a spectrum that many would find overwhelming.
The business also debunks a common industry myth: that personal concierge services are a luxury for the idle. Instead, Simply Done caters to those who are busy, helping them to "Stay in their Flame" by focusing on what they excel at, while the team handles the rest.
What sets Simply Done apart is not just the range of services but the personal touch and professional expertise. Mary's business acumen, combined with her networking skills through BNI and WBON, has built a robust referral system. Moreover, her certifications in pet first aid, CPR, and End of Life Doula training, especially for her senior clients, add layers of trust and care to her services.
In 2024, Mary plans to extend her community involvement, working with organizations like Note in the Pocket and Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary. This community connection underscores Simply Done's philosophy of giving back and supporting those around it.
Looking to the future, Mary aims to grow her team, thereby expanding Simply Done’s capacity to assist more clients. Her mission is clear: to ease the burden of daily tasks for Cary’s residents, allowing them to dedicate time to what they love, all while building a sustainable and community-focused business.
Simply Done Concierge is more than a service; it's the easy button busy work-from-home professionals always wished they had in Cary.

Todd Bowles Involved in “Wanna Get Away?” Moment with A Reporter
In an NFL wild-card playoff weekend marked by severe weather, a reporter asked Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles about cold weather preparations for an upcoming game in Detroit, not realizing the Lions play indoors.
This was like a real-life version of those Southwest Airlines “Wanna Get Away?” commercials. See video.
Bowles gently corrected the misconception, emphasizing the indoor, climate-controlled environment of Ford Field. The moment served as a reminder of the significance of understanding sports venues. Read full story
