NC Drivers Overcharged After Fuel Code Mix-Up, DMV Responds

An investigation by WRALโ€™s 5 On Your Side has revealed that fuel code errors on vehicle registrations have caused hundreds of North Carolina drivers to pay incorrect fees.

In 2023, over 26,000 vehicles were assigned the wrong fuel codes, with some owners being overcharged for electric vehicle fees. The issue primarily involved hybrid vehicles being incorrectly labeled, though the most significant impact was on electric vehicle owners who paid more than necessary.

The DMV is now working to resolve the issue by updating its system and preventing dealerships from making such changes in the future.

Drivers affected by the error can expect corrections during their registration renewal or can contact the DMV for an earlier fix and potential refund. Read full report

Cary Students Take on Abandoned Oil Wells to Combat Climate Change

Sebastian Ng, a senior at Panther Creek High School, is spearheading a local effort to address the environmental hazard of orphaned oil wells.

These wells, which emit methane and contribute significantly to climate change, have been largely overlooked in national discussions. Through the Youth Climate Initiative, Ng and his team raised $11,000 to help plug an orphaned well in Akron, Ohio, and are now working to raise $20,000 to tackle another site in Montana.

Partnering with the Well Done Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on orphaned wells, the initiative is not only providing funding but also raising awareness about the issue.

Ng's work underscores the power of youth-driven environmental activism and highlights how grassroots efforts can contribute to larger climate action. Read Full Report

Libraries to Provide Laptops and Internet Access to Wake County Residents

Wake County has accepted a $398,700 grant to help expand digital access through its public libraries.

The funds will be used to create a laptop and internet hotspot lending program for residents, with a focus on supporting low-income, rural, and aging populations. The initiative also includes upgrading library computers with new assistive technologies to enhance accessibility for residents with disabilities.

Over the next four months, county officials will develop an implementation plan to determine where the mobile access kits will be distributed. The grant is part of a larger $30 million statewide initiative to promote digital equity, funded by the American Rescue Plan, and will continue through December 2026. Read Full Story

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

The Boomerang Nebula is recognized as the coldest place in the universe that has been discovered so far. Located approximately 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus, this nebula has temperatures that plunge to less than one degree Kelvin (-272.15 degrees Celsius), colder than the natural background temperature of space. This remarkably low temperature is due to the nebula's rapid expansion, which causes the gas it emits to cool significantly. The Boomerang Nebula's unique structure and extreme conditions continue to intrigue astronomers and contribute valuable insights into the dynamics of stellar evolution.
