Cats on Diets Offer New Hope for Human Obesity Research

A recent study published in Scientific Reports reveals that pet cats could be effective models for studying obesity and its treatment in humans, focusing on the impact of diet on gut bacteria.

Researchers at Ohio State University analyzed fecal samples from overweight cats during a weight loss and maintenance period, discovering that changes in the cats’ gut microbiomes mirrored those observed in humans.

The study found that a calorie-restricted diet increased the abundance of propionic acid, a short-chain fatty acid linked to reduced fat accumulation and improved blood sugar control, alongside the bacterium Prevotella 9 copri.

The findings suggest that understanding the gut microbiome’s role in obesity could lead to microbiome-directed therapies for humans. Supported by Nestle Purina, the research underscores the potential of using pet cats to gain insights into human obesity. Read Full Report
