Where Cary's History Meets the Supernatural

The Page-Walker Hotel, built between 1868 and 1871 in Cary, North Carolina, has a storied past that intertwines with the Civil War's final days. Union troops, once stationed nearby, lost a young wounded soldier, and his horse mysteriously disappeared the following morning. Years after the hotel's construction, there were reports of a phantom horse's gallops, heard but never seen, causing unrest among the stabled horses. Today, the building, restored to its original design, serves as the Page-Walker Arts & History Center. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in its history and perhaps, on a quiet evening, hear the spectral sounds of the long-lost horse.

Take Note of These Events:

  1. The Great Pumpkin Carve - Oct. 28, 2-8 p.m. in Downtown Cary. Community pumpkin carving, face painting, and a movie showing.

  2. Ghostly Legends at the Old Hotel - Oct. 28, two showings at Page-Walker Arts & History Center. Experience ghostly tales for $20/person, ages 12+.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Treatment Gets FDA Nod: The Duke University Connection

Purple Pipette

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given the green light to AGAMREE® (vamorolone), a new treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This approval is a significant milestone, especially for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which has championed the drug's development. A notable connection to Duke University emerges through the Griffin family of Harrisburg, North Carolina. Their son, Franklin, was the inaugural participant in the U.S. clinical trial for vamorolone in 2016, and their care journey has been closely tied to the MDA Care Center at Duke University. Dr. Edward Smith, who previously held a leadership role at the MDA Care Center at Duke, has been a vocal proponent of the drug, underscoring its advantages over existing treatments. AGAMREE® promises to be a game-changer in the treatment landscape for this debilitating genetic muscle disease.

Cary Awaits Laotian Delight SAAP

Cary is set to embrace a touch of Laotian flavor. Chef Lon Bounsanga, who has previously showcased his culinary prowess as the executive chef at Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana in downtown Raleigh, is gearing up to introduce his very own Laotian restaurant, SAAP. Slated for a November 15 opening, SAAP, translating to "delicious" in Laotian, promises to serve the classic Laotian dishes that Bounsanga has popularized among North Carolina's diners. The buzz around SAAP is palpable, with Eater listing it among the top 10 eagerly awaited restaurant openings in the Carolinas this season. Food enthusiasts can find SAAP nestled on the ground floor of The Walker at 370 S. Walker St., conveniently adjacent to Cary's latest attraction, Downtown Cary Park. Learn more about SAAP here.

Cam Ward to Shine as Grand Marshal in Christmas Parade

The 79th Annual ABC11 Raleigh Christmas Parade, presented by Shop Local Raleigh, has named retired Carolina Hurricanes goaltender, Cam Ward, as its Grand Marshal, honoring his contributions to the community. This significant event, which has previously recognized figures like Sylvia Wiggins and the 82nd Airborne Division, is a major holiday attraction between Atlanta and Washington D.C. However, this year's parade faced potential cancellation due to safety concerns from a previous tragedy.

The City of Raleigh initially denied the permit but later approved it with restrictions on motorized vehicles. Despite these challenges, Shop Local Raleigh is determined to present a parade featuring 115 diverse entries, ensuring it remains a cherished tradition for Raleigh residents.
