Adoption Fees Reduced as Wake Animal Center Faces Overcrowding

The Wake County Animal Center has reached capacity after taking in 226 animals in just nine days, bringing its current population to 653 pets.
More than 230 animals are available for adoption, including dogs, cats, kittens, rabbits, and a bird. Shelter officials say the influx is typical after the Fourth of July, when many pets become lost or stray.
To help find homes quickly, the shelter is offering discounted adoption fees through July 19. Dogs can be adopted for $25 and cats for just $5.
All adopted animals are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before going to their new homes. Officials are also encouraging residents who cannot adopt to consider fostering.

Cary Readers' World Cup Picks Are In

From Cary Spotlight Issue #988
🏆 Reader Poll Results: Who Will Lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup Trophy?
As the knockout rounds heat up, Cary Spotlight readers made their picks for World Cup glory — and the tournament itself has already started separating the contenders from the pretenders. France has punched its ticket to the semifinals, Spain joined them after knocking out Belgium in the quarterfinals, and fan-favorites like Morocco, Belgium, Egypt, and Colombia have all been eliminated. Two more quarterfinal matchups — Norway vs. England and Argentina vs. Switzerland — will decide the rest of the semifinal field.
Here's how Cary Spotlight readers called it:
🥇 Argentina — 22.58%
🥈 France — 16.13%
🥈 England — 16.13%
🥉 Spain — 12.90%
🥉 Belgium — 12.90%
🥉 Norway — 12.90%
Colombia — 3.23%
Egypt — 3.23%
Morocco — 0%
Switzerland — 0%
Cary Spotlight readers put their faith in Argentina, and so far the pick is looking sharp — Lionel Messi's squad has cruised through to the quarterfinals and takes on Switzerland next. France and England tied for second in the voting, and both have delivered: France is already through to the semis, while England will face Norway for a spot in the final four.
It's a mixed bag from there. Spain rounded out the tied-for-third group and has quietly become one of the tournament's biggest movers, punching past Portugal and then Belgium to reach the semifinals already.
Meanwhile, Belgium and Norway — also tied in the voting — split down different paths: Belgium's run ended in the quarterfinals, while Norway is still alive heading into its match with England.
The lower end of the poll tells its own story. Colombia and Egypt each drew a sliver of support and are now out of the running, while Morocco and Switzerland received no votes at all — though Morocco made a real run before falling to France, and Switzerland is still fighting for a semifinal berth against Argentina.
Whoever readers were rooting for, one thing's clear: Cary's World Cup fans know how to pick a contender. Here's hoping Argentina keeps making the town's ballot box look prophetic. ⚽
Cary Readers Share Their Favorite Spots for Ice Cream

🍦 Reader Poll Results: Which Cary Ice Cream Shop Gets Your Vote for the Best?
With Cary sweating through another scorcher, we asked readers to weigh in on their favorite spot for a cool treat — and it turns out this town can't pick just one favorite.
🍦 Poll Results:
🥇 Fresh. Local Ice Cream — 27.59% (tied for first)
🥇 Andia's Homemade Ice Cream — 27.59% (tied for first)
✏️ Another favorite (write-in) — ~20.7%
🍨 Bruster's Real Ice Cream — ~10.3%
🍦 Kilwins — ~8.6%
🍦 Dairy Queen — ~6.9%
🍦 Cold Stone Creamery — ~5.2%
🍦 Menchie's Frozen Yogurt — ~1.7%
It's a genuine photo finish at the top, with Fresh. Local Ice Cream and Andia's Homemade Ice Cream deadlocked for the win. Both shops have built loyal followings in Cary, and this poll suggests neither has a clear edge — readers are simply devoted to both.
But the real story might be the write-in vote. Nearly a fifth of respondents skipped the list entirely to name a shop that wasn't even an option — and one name came up again and again: Goodberry's.
Several readers were emphatic that it belongs in the conversation, with one calling it "a Cary local favorite" and another noting they "can't believe" they had to write it in at all. If this poll gets a second round, Goodberry's may need its own spot on the ballot.
💬 Representative Reader Comments
"Goodberry's is the best by far, with Fresh being my second favorite."
"Goodberry's. I can't believe that I have to write in the name. During ice cream weather, it is always busy."
"We love Culver's. Their pricing is very reasonable and they have a large selection of flavors and their burgers are so good also."
"Two Roosters homemade ice cream."
"Amazing flavors!" (on Andia's Homemade Ice Cream)
Whatever your pick, one thing's clear: Cary doesn't do "just okay" ice cream. Stay cool out there! 🍦☀️

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Mary Lou Retton
Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton was the first female athlete to be featured on the front of a Wheaties box, making her historical cover appearance in 1984.
While Mary Lou Retton was the first woman on the front, she wasn't the first female to be on the box itself. Aviator Elinor Smith and Olympic champion golfer Babe Didrikson Zaharias appeared on the packaging in 1934 and 1935, respectively, but their photos were printed on the back and side panels rather than the main cover
