Dangerous Heat Prompts Wake County to Open Cooling Centers

Wake County is responding to an extended stretch of dangerous heat by opening more than a dozen cooling centers through Monday. Public libraries and Health and Human Services centers will also provide air-conditioned spaces and free bottled water during daytime hours.

Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat and instead seek relief in any nearby air-conditioned location. Although dedicated cooling centers will be closed on July 4, other public spaces remain an option.

The county is also expanding assistance through its Cool for Wake program, which provides free window air conditioning units to eligible households with children or older adults.

Heat Forces Changes to Cary's Independence Day Celebration

Cary's annual Independence Day celebration at Koka Booth Amphitheatre will look different this year as organizers adjust plans to accommodate dangerously high temperatures expected on Saturday.

With heat index values forecast to top 100 degrees, event organizers have shortened the schedule and canceled some performances to protect attendees, staff and performers. The celebration will now begin at 6 p.m., and street closures will start at 7 p.m.

Updated Event Schedule

Despite the changes, all previously scheduled food trucks will remain on site. The stage program will feature the Scouts of America presenting the colors, North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green reading a poem created for North Carolina's 250th celebration, and actor Mike Wiley and musician Dawn Landes presenting "Well, I Declare: America at 250."

The evening will conclude with fireworks at 9:25 p.m., followed by an after-party featuring a DJ and prize drawings for tickets to an upcoming Ella Langley concert and an autographed Carolina Hurricanes hockey stick.

Symphony Performance Canceled

The most significant change is the cancellation of the North Carolina Symphony's annual performance. The orchestra said this is the first time it has been unable to participate in the longtime community tradition because of extreme heat and expressed appreciation for the community's understanding.

Staying Safe in the Heat

Koka Booth Amphitheatre is encouraging attendees to wear lightweight clothing, bring a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the evening. Misting stations will also be available to help guests cool off during the event.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Orange

Despite the name, a flight's "black box" is actually painted bright orange. This vibrant, international orange color is used so investigators can easily spot the devices among crash debris or in deep water.

According to Airbus, the misnomer likely stuck around because early, experimental flight recorders utilized rolls of photographic film kept inside light-tight, blackened boxes.
