What's Next for Wake County's Landfill?

Wake County is asking residents to weigh in on how it should handle trash after the South Wake Landfill reaches capacity around 2040.

Wake County is planning for the future of the South Wake Landfill, which is expected to be full by 2040. The landfill currently handles about 500,000 tons of waste each year.

Officials are evaluating three options: building a new landfill, constructing a waste-to-energy facility, or transporting trash to regional landfills. Each option presents different financial, environmental and community challenges.

County leaders say planning must begin now because of Wake County's continued population growth and increasing waste production. Public feedback will help shape the county's long-term strategy.

A final community input meeting will be held June 25 at the Walnut Creek Wetland Center, with a recommendation expected to reach county commissioners within the next year.

Hurricanes' Title Run Gives Wake County a $13.4 Million Boost

The Carolina Hurricanes' run to the Stanley Cup delivered an estimated $13.4 million economic impact to Wake County, according to the team, Visit Raleigh and the NHL. Six Stanley Cup Final events, including three home games and three watch parties, attracted more than 112,000 fans.

Officials said the events generated more than 6,700 hotel room nights and more than $255,000 in tax revenue, while increasing business for hotels, restaurants and tourism-related businesses throughout the region. Visitors traveled from all 50 states and two countries to attend the games.

The championship celebration continued with a record-setting parade that drew nearly 193,000 people to downtown Raleigh, making it the largest event in the city's history. The crowd easily surpassed attendance at the franchise's 2006 Stanley Cup parade.

State leaders also recognized the achievement, with Gov. Josh Stein proclaiming June 20 as the beginning of "Stanley Cup Summer" to honor the Hurricanes' second Stanley Cup championship and first title in 20 years.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: A lizard

The "horny toad" (or horned toad) is not a toad or an amphibian at all; it is actually a small reptile, specifically a horned lizard. Native to the deserts and semi-arid regions of North and Central America, they earned their nickname due to their squat, flat, toad-like bodies and the spiny horns on their heads.
