Free Meals for Children During Summer Break

Wake County and Cumberland County Schools are once again offering free summer meal programs to help children access nutritious food while school is out. The programs are available to all children and teens 18 and younger, regardless of income.

Wake County's Summer Food Service Program operates at sites across Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, Wendell, Willow Spring and Zebulon. Four locations were added to the program this year, expanding access for families across the county.

The program in Wake County runs through Aug. 16, while Cumberland County's program continues through July 31. Meal schedules vary by location, and families are encouraged to check local program information before visiting.

In Cumberland County, several meal sites also offer recreational activities such as sports, playgrounds, swimming and splash pads, giving children additional opportunities to stay active while receiving meals.

Just curious…

Celebrate Pride Through Song

PopUp Chorus Broadway will take place at The Cary Theater on June 20 as part of a Pride-themed community celebration. The event encourages participants to sing alongside fellow Broadway enthusiasts in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The program is open to everyone, regardless of musical experience. Participants will learn harmonies and arrangements for two familiar Broadway songs under the direction of conductor Sean Grier.

The evening concludes with a dress rehearsal and a filmed group performance, giving attendees the opportunity to experience the excitement of performing as part of a chorus without a long-term commitment.

Tickets are available for $20, with discounted admission for Cary Film Circle members.

For more details, visit The Cary Theater.

Hurricanes End 20-Year Wait for Stanley Cup

The Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup champions for the first time since 2006. A dominant defensive effort and a clutch performance from goaltender Brandon Bussi helped Carolina finish off the Vegas Golden Knights with a convincing Game 6 victory.

Highlights:

  • Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6, sealing the Stanley Cup Final and bringing the championship back to Carolina after a 20-year drought.

  • Goaltender Brandon Bussi delivered a huge performance with a 22-save shutout, his first career playoff shutout, while Taylor Hall scored just 3:47 into the game to give Carolina an early spark.

  • Jackson Blake contributed a goal and an assist, and Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal as the Hurricanes' defense completely smothered Vegas, limiting scoring chances throughout the night.

  • Team captain Jordan Staal, who earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, helped lead a resilient Carolina squad that battled back from multiple deficits during the series and finally broke through after several deep playoff runs under coach Rod Brind'Amour.

The Stanley Cup is headed back to Carolina, adding another memorable chapter to a region that continues to prove it loves championship sports.

The Hurricanes announced late Sunday night that a Stanley Cup victory parade will be held Saturday, June 20, beginning at 11 a.m.

The team said the parade will take place in downtown Raleigh, though additional details — including the route, road closures, parking information and any potential rally plans — have not yet been announced 🏆🏒

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: porpoise

The animal name that literally means "pig-fish" is the porpoise. The word traces back to the Medieval Latin porcopiscis, which is a combination of porcus (meaning "pig") and piscis (meaning "fish"). This evolved into the Old French word porpais, which eventually gave us the English name.

In some English-speaking coastal communities, a harbor porpoise is even given the nickname "puffing pig" because of the sound they make when they surface to breathe
