Hurricanes Chase Second Stanley Cup

The Carolina Hurricanes have won one Stanley Cup championship in franchise history, capturing the title in 2006.
The team is now back on hockey's biggest stage, facing the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. Through two games, the best-of-seven series is tied 1-1 after a pair of dramatic comebacks.
Vegas opened the series with a 5-4 victory after overcoming a two-goal deficit. Carolina responded in Game 2, rallying from a 2-0 third-period deficit to earn a 4-3 overtime win. Seth Jarvis scored the game-winning power-play goal to even the series.
The matchup now shifts to Las Vegas for Game 3 on June 6.
Including this year's appearance, the Hurricanes have reached the Stanley Cup Final four times in franchise history. Their previous appearances came in 2002, 2006, and 2024, with the 2006 championship remaining the organization's only Stanley Cup title.
How confident are you that Carolina will bring home its second Stanley Cup?

Cary Readers React to the New Tax Rate
From Cary Spotlight Issue #953
Reader Poll: Wake County's new budget will raise property taxes by about $90 per year for the owner of a median-priced home. Which best reflects your view?
When Wake County commissioners unanimously approved a $2.28 billion budget last month — bumping the property tax rate to 53.71 cents per $100 of assessed value — they framed it as a necessary step to close a $35 million revenue shortfall and fund priorities like public safety, education, and food security programs. Cary Spotlight readers had thoughts. Lots of them.
Poll Results:
🚫 Not worth it — County leaders should have reduced spending or found other revenue sources. — 43.06%
😬 Mixed feelings — The investments are important, but I'm concerned about higher taxes. — ~32%
✅ Worth it — Investing more in schools, public safety, and community programs is the right move. — ~18%
🏠 Depends on the homeowner — The impact will vary based on household finances and property values. — ~7%
Skepticism ran deep in the comments. Several readers questioned why growing development and new construction weren't generating enough revenue on their own to offset costs, with one asking pointedly why the tax burden keeps falling on longtime residents instead.
Others raised concerns about fiscal management — citing the $35 million shortfall itself as evidence that better oversight was needed before turning to property owners for more.
One reader noted the difficulty seniors on fixed incomes face when assessments and tax rates both climb at once, making it harder to stay in homes they've owned for decades.
Not everyone was opposed. A few readers acknowledged that cuts to essential services have real consequences, and that with more businesses and homeowners moving into the area, a modest increase may be reasonable to sustain what the community expects.
Readers Responses:
"With all the growth in apartments and homes being built, why doesn't that generate the additional revenue instead of adding tax burden to residents who've been here a long time?"
"There have been too many cuts to basic, critical programs. This seems to be a reasonable increase, given the increased influx of businesses and homeowners."
"Seniors in North Carolina need a break on their property taxes. Most other states do. Raising the assessments and then the taxes based on those assessments is making it difficult for some seniors on fixed incomes to stay in their homes."
For a community as engaged as Cary's, a $90-a-year question was never going to get a simple answer — and the range of responses here proves it.
Somewhat Ready for Hurricane Season
From Cary Spotlight Issue #956
📊 Reader Poll Results: As hurricane season begins, how prepared do you feel for a prolonged power outage?
With Duke Energy's Wake County control center now operating around the clock to coordinate storm response, hurricane season is officially top of mind for the region. Cary Spotlight asked readers to take an honest look inward — and the results suggest most of us are somewhere between ready and winging it.
Poll Results:
☑️ Somewhat prepared — I have a few essentials but could do more. — 40.00%
⬛ Not very prepared — I would need to gather supplies if a storm was approaching. — ~27%
🔸 Very prepared — I have supplies, backup power, and a plan. — ~17%
🔥 Not prepared at all — I haven't made any preparations yet. — ~8%
🔥 I don't think about it much — I'll deal with it if it happens. — ~8%
The results paint a familiar picture: most Cary residents have some supplies tucked away but quietly know there's more to be done. Nearly a third said they'd need to scramble for supplies if a storm was actually bearing down — which, as anyone who's watched a hurricane track shift overnight can tell you, isn't a lot of lead time.
On the bright side, fewer than one in five said they're not thinking about it at all, which suggests hurricane awareness in the community is reasonably solid even if the prep work hasn't fully caught up.
No reader comments were included with this poll's data — but the numbers speak clearly enough on their own.
The good news: there's still time. Duke Energy's 24/7 Wake County control center is already in position for the season. The question is whether your flashlight batteries are.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: A&W Root beer
It all started when Roy W. Allen opened a roadside root beer stand in Lodi, CA. From there, Allen partnered with Frank Wright, and together they coined the name A&W, which has become synonymous with root beer ever since.
In June 1919, Roy Allen opened a roadside root beer stand in Lodi, California, using a proprietary formula he bought from an Arizona pharmacist. He sold his first drinks for five cents to crowds celebrating the homecoming of World War I veterans.
After buying out Wright's share in 1924, Allen began selling restaurant franchises. This created the very first franchised restaurant chain in the United State.
