Fancy Gap to Open CaryLive! Season

Credit: Downtown Cary Park

Live music returns to the Great Lawn Pavilion next Saturday, May 30, as Fancy Gap opens this year’s CaryLive! series at Downtown Cary Park.

The indie-folk duo, made up of singer-songwriter Stuart McLamb of The Love Language and songwriter-producer Charles Crossingham, brings a warm, cinematic sound shaped by intimate songwriting and a sense of nostalgia.

The free concert invites visitors to bring friends, chairs and blankets for an evening of music under the stars. CaryLive! is part of Downtown Cary Park’s seasonal concert programming, offering community members a chance to gather for live performances in the heart of Cary.

Fancy Gap released its self-titled debut album last year, earning attention from several music publications and appearing on PBS North Carolina’s Shaped By Sound. The duo has also performed alongside artists including Old Crow Medicine Show, American Aquarium, Futurebirds and Susto.

Cary Readers Sound Off on Summer Heat

From Cary Spotlight Issue #936

Reader Poll: How Are You Feeling About the Return of 90-Degree Heat?

Central NC's summer heat is back — and if our readers have anything to say about it, the feeling is pretty mutual: it arrived too fast. "Too hot, too soon" ran away with nearly half the response, leaving the heat's few defenders in the dust.

🏆 Too hot, too soon — ~46%
🌧️ I just want some rain — ~26%
☀️ Bring it on. I'm ready for summer — ~16%
💧 More worried about the drought than the heat — ~7%
🌤️ Perfect weather for the weekend — ~5% (estimated)

Apparently, "perfect weather for the weekend" didn't find many takers; though with drought conditions lingering across the region, it's clear Cary residents have more than sunscreen on their minds.

Cary-Area Readers Want More Than Band-Aid Fixes for School HVAC Failures

From Cary Spotlight Issue #942

📊 Reader Poll Results: How Concerned Are You About HVAC Problems in Wake County Schools?

With record heat hitting central NC and end-of-grade testing right around the corner, Wake County's HVAC failures landed squarely on readers' radar — and the concern level is high. Nearly four in ten said the situation is a direct threat to students' ability to learn.

🔥 Extremely concerned — classrooms are too hot for effective learning — ~39% 🏚️ The bigger issue is aging school infrastructure — ~31%
❄️ Schools without reliable cooling should close for the day — ~13%
😐 Not too concerned — temporary issues happen — ~11%
📅 Testing should be postponed if schools lose AC — ~9%
💬 Other (please share your thoughts) — ~7%
🔧 Somewhat concerned — the district needs faster repairs — ~3%

Readers weren't just worried about this week's heat — many pointed to deeper problems: aging buildings, deferred maintenance, and questions about whether funding is being directed where it's most needed.

One reader offered a straightforward prescription: "They should test systems each year before heat starts. Be proactive." Another put it simply: "The discomfort of a hot classroom certainly has to interfere with the students' ability to concentrate on the lessons." And at least one reader wants to know where prior infrastructure dollars actually went: "Where did the covid money go that was supposed to go to HVAC."

The results reflect a community that sees this as more than a temporary glitch — it's a symptom of a school system stretched thin by aging infrastructure and tight budgets, with students and test scores on the line.

Just curious…

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Waffle iron

The soles of Nike's first running shoes—the famous "Moon Shoe" and Waffle Trainer—were inspired by a household waffle iron.

In 1971, Nike co-founder and track coach Bill Bowerman was searching for a lightweight, grippy shoe to use on artificial tracks. He realized the raised grid pattern on his wife's breakfast waffle iron would make the perfect mold for a springy, high-traction rubber sole. He ruined multiple waffle makers during his kitchen experiments, but the resulting design provided revolutionary traction and propelled the brand to massive success.
