Hurricane Preparedness Week Highlights Need for Early Planning

Federal emergency and weather agencies are reminding residents that hurricane season is approaching and preparations should begin immediately. National Hurricane Preparedness Week, observed May 3 through May 9, highlights the importance of planning before storms threaten communities.

Officials recommend that families create evacuation and communication plans, especially for households in flood-prone or coastal areas. Residents are also encouraged to prepare emergency supply kits with food, water, medications, batteries, and other essentials that could support a household for several days after a storm.

Insurance preparation is another major focus. Homeowners and renters are being reminded that flood coverage is not typically included in standard insurance policies, and separate flood insurance policies often require a 30-day waiting period before becoming active.

Emergency officials also stress the importance of strengthening homes before hurricane season begins. Preventive measures such as installing shutters, trimming trees, and reinforcing garage doors can help reduce storm damage and improve safety during severe weather events.

Cary's Comfort Food Verdict Is In

From Cary Spotlight Issue ##922

🍕 What is Your Go-To Comfort Food in Cary?

When it comes to comfort food, Cary readers have spoken — and the answer is pretty saucy. This week's just-for-fun poll asked: When you just want something easy and satisfying, what are you picking? With eight delicious options on the table, the results were a tasty mix of classics and cravings.

🍕 Pizza — always reliable34.88%

🏆 🥡 Asian takeout — est. ~19%

🌮 Tacos or Mexican food — est. ~12%

🍗 Fried chicken — crispy comfort — est. ~9%

🔥 BBQ — smoky and classic — est. ~9%

🍔 Burgers and fries — est. ~8%

🍟 Fried fish — simple and satisfying — est. ~7%

🍰 Dessert — sweet over savory — est. ~7%

Pizza ran away with the top spot, pulling in more than a third of all votes — proof that in Cary, when in doubt, you order a pie. Asian takeout held a strong second, and tacos showed there's always room for a little spice in the rotation

💬 What readers had to say:

"How about a Cheddar Bo Biscuit?" — a Tacos or Mexican food voter with very specific comfort food energy

“Easy, good and not as fattening as some other fast foods." — an Asian takeout fan making the case for smarter snacking

Whether you're reaching for a slice, a carton of fried rice, or apparently a Bojangles biscuit, Cary clearly knows how to eat well. 🧡

Tax Stability Is Cary Residents' Top Budget Priority

From Cary Spotlight Issue #922

📊 Reader Poll Results: What Should Cary Prioritize in the Upcoming Budget?

As Cary Town Council heads into budget season with a staff proposal expected in mid-May and a federal housing plan due by May 15. We asked readers what they think should come first.

The results revealed a community that's feeling the financial squeeze.

Keeping taxes low and predictable ran away with the top spot, earning 40.63% of the vote. I

it wasn't particularly close. Housing affordability and availability came in second at an estimated ~29%, followed by infrastructure and growth planning at roughly ~17%.

Community programs and social services and preservation, culture, and quality of life rounded out the field with an estimated ~5% and ~7% respectively.

💬 What readers had to say:

"My daughter moved to Cary in 2024. It is important for her (and I am sure many others, especially first time buyers) for taxes to remain stable in order for her to continue to afford her house."

"There needs to be affordable housing in Cary for the people that are underpaid."

"Taxes are squeezing seniors out of the state."

Whether it's a young family stretching to stay in their home or a longtime resident watching fixed income shrink, Cary readers are sending a clear message to town leaders: keep an eye on the bottom line.
