Question: What are affected by Phylloxera?
(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.)
Parents across the Triangle often wonder how their teens can build meaningful leadership experience that truly stands out when applying to college.
An upcoming Hum Sub Youth Leadership Summit in Cary is designed to help students begin exploring those opportunities. The event invites students in Grades 8–11 from across the Triangle to learn about leadership, entrepreneurship, and ways young people can start building experiences that colleges value.

Early Morning Evacuation at RDU Terminal 1
Terminal 1 at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was evacuated early Monday after airport officials received an anonymous threat around 4:20 a.m. Law enforcement and Transportation Security Administration officers quickly responded and began inspecting the terminal.
During the investigation, passengers and airport staff were asked to leave the building. Hundreds of travelers waited outside as officers conducted a security sweep of the facility.
Authorities described the situation as an active security concern while the investigation was underway. The terminal remained closed for nearly two hours.
By approximately 6 a.m., officials said law enforcement had cleared the terminal and allowed normal operations to resume. Airport officials said a law enforcement presence would remain as a precaution.
Apex Recovers Stolen Data After 2024 Cyberattack
Town officials in Apex provided an update Monday on a cyberattack that targeted municipal systems in July 2024. Investigators determined the incident was an attempted ransomware attack that may have exposed the personal data of about 22,000 people.
Authorities later discovered the stolen information had been uploaded to Bublup, a U.S.-based cloud storage provider. The company was not involved in the attack but required a court order before releasing the files.
Apex successfully sought a temporary restraining order from Wake County Superior Court in October 2024, compelling the provider to return the town’s data. Officials said the order allowed them to recover and review the stolen information.
Town leaders say there is no evidence the data has been posted on the dark web and are now working with a third-party team to notify affected residents. The town also plans to restore normal billing operations this summer after more than a year of disruptions caused by the attack.
What’s your reaction to Apex recovering the stolen data?

Courage Fall at Home as Manaka Scores in Return
North Carolina Courage had a tough Saturday night in Cary, falling behind early and never fully recovering in a 3-1 loss to Bay FC. Still, the night gave fans a bright spot with Manaka Matsukubo scoring in her first appearance of the season.
Weekend Highlights:
Bay FC took control fast, scoring three first-half goals and putting the Courage in a deep hole before halftime. That early burst gave the visitors all the momentum and made it tough for North Carolina to climb back.
Manaka Matsukubo gave the home crowd something to cheer about in the 66th minute, finishing a cutback from Ryan Williams for the Courage’s only goal. It was a strong return for Matsukubo in her first game of the season and also marked her 50th NWSL regular-season appearance.
The match was more competitive than the final score showed, with Bay FC only edging the Courage in shots, 14-13. Kailen Sheridan kept North Carolina in the fight with four saves.
There were also a few notable milestones for the Courage, as Ally Schlegel made her club debut off the bench and Sydney Schmidt became the youngest player to start a match for North Carolina. The crowd of 7,013 at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park saw a mix of tough lessons and promising moments.
Even on a rough night, Cary still showed why it is one of the most passionate soccer towns around.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
A: Grapevines
Phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae), a microscopic, aphid-like insect native to North America, primarily affects grapevines (genus Vitis). It is one of the most destructive pests in viticulture history, specifically targeting the roots and, in some cases, leaves of the vine.
