NC Advisory Council Examines AI Use in Schools
Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming part of everyday learning for students across North Carolina. Now, a statewide advisory council is looking at how schools can guide that use while protecting student safety.
🤖 AI Already in Classrooms: A report from Common Sense Media found 70% of students are already using AI tools for learning in some way, often without clear guidance from schools.
🧑🏫 Teaching Responsible Use: Vera Cubero, an emerging technology consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, says schools should teach students to use AI as a learning support, not a shortcut that replaces critical thinking.
📚 Age-Appropriate Guidelines: Education officials are developing recommendations outlining how AI should be used at different grade levels, helping teachers and students understand when and how the technology is appropriate.
🛡️ Putting Guardrails in Place: State leaders say they want to avoid repeating mistakes made when social media first entered schools, when many districts were slow to address risks and misuse.
⚖️ Policy vs. Flexibility: Some experts caution that strict legislation may struggle to keep up with rapidly evolving AI technology, suggesting flexible guidance could be more effective than rigid laws.
State officials say the goal is to get ahead of the technology, ensuring students benefit from AI tools while keeping safeguards in place for safety and privacy.
Just curious…
Should AI be allowed in classrooms?

Courage Didn’t Lose to Defending NWSL Champs
The North Carolina Courage picked up a hard-earned point Saturday night with a 0-0 draw against Gotham FC in New Jersey. It was a fast-moving match with chances on both sides, but the goalkeepers made sure neither team broke through.
Weekend Highlights:
North Carolina Courage and Gotham FC played to a 0-0 draw in a competitive, back-and-forth battle at Sports Illustrated Stadium. The Courage held a slight edge in shots, 13-10, showing they were active on the attack even without finding the net.
Three players made a big career step for the Courage, as Sydney Schmidt, Evelyn Ijeh, and Uno Shiragaki all made their NWSL debuts in the second half. That gave the match an extra boost of excitement and showed the club’s young talent is starting to get its chance.
Sydney Schmidt nearly made her debut unforgettable, ripping a first-time shot from outside the box that just sailed over the crossbar. It was one of the Courage’s best scoring chances and a sign of the spark she brought off the bench.
Veteran goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan added another milestone to her impressive career, becoming just the fourth goalkeeper in NWSL history to reach 15,000 regular-season minutes. That’s a huge mark and another reminder of how steady she has been for this team.
The Courage now head home to face Bay FC on Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. ET, and this draw gave them a solid platform to build on. Around here, weekends stay a little more exciting when North Carolina soccer is in the spotlight.
